Disney owns many well-known franchises, but one of their most unusual – a mix of fantasy and science fiction that first appeared 51 years ago – is ripe for a modern remake. While Disney has had success with sci-fi like Marvel and Star Wars, many of their other attempts at the genre have surprisingly failed, despite having all the elements of a hit. Films like A Wrinkle in Time, John Carter, and Artemis Fowl didn’t perform well, suggesting Disney sometimes struggles with sci-fi despite its potential.
Despite many Disney franchises relying heavily on sequels, the Witch Mountain movies stood out. It all began on March 21, 1975, with director John Hough’s Escape to Witch Mountain, followed by Return from Witch Mountain in 1978 and Beyond Witch Mountain in 1982. The original story was later remade as an ABC Family movie in 1995, and then reimagined again in 2009 with Race to Witch Mountain, directed by Andy Fickman, known for She’s The Man.
Escape To Witch Mountain Is One of Disney’s Most Ambitiously Weird Franchises

While each Witch Mountain movie puts a fresh twist on the core idea, they all share a similar storyline. These films center around two alien children trying to find a human who can help them return to their home planet. They need to reach Witch Mountain and repair their damaged spaceship, but they’re constantly chased by government officials and others who want to capture them before they can escape Earth, creating a fast-paced and exciting adventure.
The story might seem a bit intense for a children’s film, and that’s understandable. Both the original Witch Mountain movies and the 2009 remake didn’t simplify their unusual ideas for younger audiences, and critics actually liked that about them. While not one of Dwayne Johnson’s most famous movies, the 2009 version is a surprisingly exciting and action-packed update to the 1975 film. Even the original Escape To Witch Mountain remains a fun and fast-paced adventure with a really interesting concept.
Disney’s Witch Mountain Franchise Needs A New Reboot After Its Cancelled TV Show

As a lifelong movie fan, I was really excited when I heard about a possible Witch Mountain reboot with Bryce Dallas Howard. Sadly, she let us all know earlier this year that those plans fell through. It’s a bummer, but honestly, Disney shouldn’t give up on it! The original series is seriously underrated. Think about it – these kids with incredible psychic powers, and the creepy villains trying to capture and experiment on them… there’s so much cool, untapped potential there. It’s a story that could totally work as a longer-form TV series, diving deeper into all that fascinating lore.
With Disney constantly adapting its popular movies and franchises for television – from Alien to The Mighty Ducks – the Witch Mountain films stand out as a series that never quite got the chance to fully explore its potential. A new show rebooting the original Escape to Witch Mountain story would be a fantastic project for Disney in 2026.
