53 Years Ago, Marvel’s Best Villain Made His Halloween Debut

Thanos, also known as the Mad Titan, is widely considered one of Marvel’s greatest villains. Beyond being the main antagonist in the hugely popular Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s been central to many famous comic book stories like Infinity Gauntlet and Annihilation. These stories are so impactful because watching Thanos relentlessly pursue his aims is truly captivating. He’s left a significant mark on the superhero world in both comics and movies, and today we celebrate his legacy – it’s the 53rd anniversary of his first appearance this Halloween!

Every character has a beginning, and for Thanos, it all started with the release of Iron Man #55 back in October 1972. Surprisingly, Thanos wasn’t originally meant to be a major villain – his first appearance almost didn’t lead to anything more! Luckily, he quickly became popular with fans. His debut story is still enjoyable to read, and to mark 53 years since the Mad Titan first appeared, let’s revisit it and see how the character has evolved.

The Mad Conqueror of Titan

The story began with a surprising scene featuring Drax the Destroyer’s first appearance, as he urgently warned Iron Man about Thanos’s powerful twin enforcers, the Blood Brothers. However, Iron Man was quickly overwhelmed and captured, being taken to Thanos’s base in the desert. During the journey, Drax shared his backstory with Iron Man, revealing that Thanos came from Titan, a moon of Saturn, and was the son of its ruler, Mentor. Thanos tried to overthrow his father by building weapons, but failed and was banished from Titan for disturbing the peace with his creations.

Unsurprisingly, Thanos came back seeking revenge. He gathered a fearsome army of criminals and warriors from across the universe and returned to conquer Titan. Desperate to save his people, Mentor asked Kronos, a powerful cosmic being, for help. Kronos created Drax specifically to defeat Thanos, and Drax eagerly attacked his enemy. Their fight was so intense it shattered the planet they were on. Sadly, Drax lost and was captured, which brings us to where the story begins.

Iron Man attempted to escape from prison, but Thanos intervened, declaring his intent to conquer Earth and Titan. With help from Mentor, Iron Man and Drax broke free and defeated the Blood Brothers. Thanos returned, threatening to destroy everything, but the heroes managed to defeat him—only to discover he was a robotic decoy. They narrowly escaped the resulting explosion and went their separate ways, with Drax vowing to track down the real Thanos and end his threat.

A Monster From the Very Beginning

It’s striking how similar this early depiction of Thanos is to his modern portrayal. Most characters with long histories evolve over time, experimenting with different personalities before settling on a core identity. But Thanos was instantly defined: a ruthless ruler determined to control everything, willing to use both brute force and cunning to achieve his goals. He was cold, calculating, and carried himself with an air of entitlement – traits that have remained consistent throughout his decades-long story.

He would, of course, later become fixated on Death and the powerful weapons of the Marvel Universe. It didn’t take long for that to happen; Thanos stole the Cosmic Cube in his very next appearance, in Captain Marvel #25 (released just two months later). Thanos immediately made a strong impression with his distinct personality and captivating presence, which contributed significantly to his popularity. He had a clear sense of self and unwavering determination to achieve his ambitions.

Thanos is a major Marvel villain who immediately stood out as a powerful threat. From the start, he seemed destined for greatness, and perhaps his conflict with Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was inevitable, considering his origins.
