6 Best ‘90s RPGS That Still Hold Up Today

The 1990s were a golden age for role-playing games. While the 80s gave us some classics, advancements in computer memory during the 90s allowed developers to create much bigger and more immersive RPGs. This led to some truly unforgettable games. Though not all of these 90s RPGs feel completely modern, many of the best ones are still enjoyable to play today.

Here are six RPGs from the ’90s that still hold up.

6) Suikoden II

Suikoden II is a remarkable game. Konami created over 100 unique characters for players to find and add to their army. Despite the large number, each character feels individual and well-developed. It’s a huge game and is widely considered the best in the Suikoden series.

What really makes Suikoden II stand out is its engaging combat system. While many fights are typical battles, the game also features one-on-one duels and large-scale army confrontations. And if you enjoy Suikoden II, you’ll likely love Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, a newer game created by the original director that builds on the same classic formula.

5) Planescape: Torment

No list of great games would be complete without something from Black Isle Studios. Many fans debate between the first two Fallout games, and they’re both excellent. However, I believe Planescape: Torment is just a little bit better.

Okay, so this game definitely feels a bit more updated, and it runs on the classic Infinity Engine – you know, that gives it that awesome ’90s RPG vibe. But honestly, the story is what really sets it apart. I’ve played a ton of RPGs, and nothing has ever quite matched it. It’s just such a unique experience. I’d recommend grabbing the Enhanced Edition if you’re jumping in now, but even the original still holds up incredibly well.

4) Earthbound

Like Planescape, Earthbound is truly one of a kind. While the other games in the Mother series share a similar feel, nothing else really captures the same special quality as Earthbound.

Games like Undertale, Lisa, and Omori have tried to capture the same magic, but nothing quite compares to this SNES classic. It’s a wonderfully cheerful game set in a uniquely American world, constantly surprising players with its discoveries. Any fan of role-playing games should definitely experience it.

3) Baldur’s Gate

Since I’m mentioning Planescape, I also need to include Baldur’s Gate. This groundbreaking RPG really launched BioWare into the spotlight in the late 90s, and it’s worth playing—even just to see where this now-major developer started.

This version of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is absolutely worth playing, regardless of how much the series has improved over time. Later games using the Infinity Engine were great, but there’s a unique charm to experiencing the Sword Coast in Baldur’s Gate. If you’re playing now, the Enhanced Edition is the way to go, and it’s no surprise that Baldur’s Gate games are still being made today.

2) Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy Tactics is a beautiful game for the PlayStation that successfully blends the classic Final Fantasy experience with tactical RPG gameplay. It’s considered one of the very best games in the Final Fantasy series, and it truly lives up to that reputation.

The game offers a good balance between complex strategy for hardcore fans and easy-to-learn gameplay for more casual players. Its story is a classic Final Fantasy adventure – a long, engaging journey with plenty of surprises and memorable characters. While it was updated in 2025, and that’s the best version to play, the core of what makes The Ivalice Chronicles great is its solid foundation.

1) Chrono Trigger

It’s disappointing that we haven’t gotten more Chrono Trigger games. The original is considered a classic, and the time travel concept has a lot of potential. Sadly, Square Enix decided against making any more games after Chrono Cross, leaving fans hoping for a sequel that never came.

It’s true that Chrono Trigger remains special, in part because Square didn’t overdo it with sequels or spin-offs. Still, the game deserves more recognition from the developers. It’s one of their most engaging creations, and it really advanced the genre with its exciting battles and multiple ways to finish the story. If you only play one game from this list, make it Chrono Trigger.
