6 Best Magical Creatures in The Ancient Magus’ Bride

Chise Hatori has always been different, and her unusual powers have led to loneliness and rejection. Desperate for a place to belong, she makes a shocking decision: she puts herself up for auction. She’s purchased for a fortune by a mysterious, masked man who takes her to a beautiful cottage in the English countryside. Chise soon discovers she’s a rare and valuable being called a ‘Sleigh Beggy,’ and that her buyer, the mage Elias Ainsworth, intends for her to become both his apprentice and his wife. This new life opens Chise’s eyes to a hidden world of magic, fairies, and monsters, allowing her to finally accept her own powers and forge meaningful connections with others.

While learning magic from Elias, Chise discovers a hidden magical world all around her. Set in a charming countryside filled with lush plants used for potions, *The Ancient Magus’ Bride* is brimming with magical creatures. It would be fantastic if the series released a guide to all the fantastical flora and fauna – from banshees and dragons to selkies and salamanders – a sort of bestiary and herbarium!

6) Heralds of Yule

I’m absolutely fascinated by the Heralds of Yule! They’re these incredible creatures – a male and female pair, with these partial wings – and they show up to announce the arrival of winter and the Yule season. They’re generally really friendly and love to chat, though they do have a bit of a playful, mischievous side. What’s *really* interesting is that each one only has a single wing, which reminds me of the Jian from Chinese mythology – a bird with one eye and one wing that needs its partner to fly! It’s like they’re mirroring that ancient myth, relying on each other to soar.

5) Ariel

The Ariel are small, winged creatures often resembling traditional fairies, but with unique features like feathers, bird-like feet, and antennae. Known for their playful and mischievous nature, they control the winds. When Chise arrived, several Ariel were drawn to her magical aura, even attempting to bring her to their realm. Jade is a particularly prominent Ariel who becomes fond of Chise and appears repeatedly throughout the story.

4) Dragons

I’ve always been fascinated by dragons – those huge, winged, fire-breathing creatures! Along with things like unicorns and fairies, they’re instantly recognizable in fantasy stories. In this particular world, most dragons are becoming rare, and many have found a safe haven in Iceland, protected by someone named Lindel. What’s really interesting is the variety of dragons in *The Ancient Magus’ Bride*. They’ve taken the lore to a whole new level! There are the Uil, which are slender, light blue dragons with wings that look like arms. Then there are the Beanna, which walk on two legs with bird feet, have horns and feathered necks, but surprisingly, no wings! And finally, the Gaoth Arach – these dragons look like they’re made of stone, have a single horn, and can actually fly despite their heavy, bulky bodies.

3) Leánnan Sídhe

Leánnan Sídhe are a type of fairy known as vampire fae; they feed on human blood and, in return, give people special abilities. Often depicted as winged, lightly dressed females with pointed ears, they usually see their connection with humans as a simple, emotionless trade. However, Chise encounters one named Redcurrant who is different – she has fallen in love with a human man named Joel.

2) Black Grim

When dogs die, they sometimes return as black-furred creatures that still look like their former selves. Some people believe these ‘Church Grims’ once served the goddess of death. After becoming fae, they gain magical abilities like shadow travel, fire breathing, and shapeshifting, and often act as guardians of the dead and their graves. Ruth is one of these Black Grims, and she became Chise’s familiar.

1) Cotton Fly

Cotton Flies, also known as Woolly Bugs, are charming, winged creatures that look like a mix between sheep and insects. They have six legs, antennae that resemble ram horns, woolly coats, and six wings. Throughout the series, they appear both as a central part of the plot in Episode 13, “East, West, Home’s Best” – where Chise helps shear them and briefly confuses one with a Snow Fly – and as recurring details that enhance the magical world.
