The early 1990s were a golden age for fast-paced, action-packed “run-and-gun” games. While PC gaming was shifting towards first-person shooters, console players were still loving the intense gameplay inspired by classics like Contra. These games were known for being quick, exciting, and challenging. SNES developers often designed their games with the same difficulty as arcade games, resulting in some incredibly tough titles. This focus on challenging gameplay helped establish the SNES as a premier platform for shooter games of that time.
Here are the six best run-and-gun shooters on the Super Nintendo.
6) Demolition Man

It’s probably surprising, but the movie Demolition Man, starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes, actually inspired a really good video game. Published by Acclaim, the game is a fast-paced, action-packed shooter where you play as John Spartan, trying to stop the villain Simon Phoenix. While much of the gameplay involves classic side-scrolling action, Demolition Man also throws in some unique and unexpected elements.
The game frequently changes to an overhead perspective, which keeps the action exciting. These shifts in camera angle help Demolition Man maintain its fast pace. The Super Nintendo version is usually preferred because it looks more vibrant than the Sega Genesis version. And, the SNES version includes cheat codes, which is a nice addition.
5) Cybernator

Konami’s Cybernator is known as Assault Suits Valken in Japan, and many fans consider that title to be superior. Despite the less-impressive name, Cybernator is a fantastic run-and-gun action game featuring mechs. While it’s the second game in the Assault Suit series, the story actually takes place before the events of the first game.
Visually, Cybernator is a standout title on the SNES, perfectly capturing the gritty atmosphere of its world. While the fast-paced shooting gameplay is similar to other run-and-gun games on the system, Cybernator really pushes the SNES’s graphical capabilities. It’s a good look at Japanese game design from 1992 and worth playing if you’re curious about that era.
4) Pocky & Rocky

I absolutely loved playing Pocky & Rocky! It’s a top-down shooter where you move side-to-side, which felt pretty unique back then. If you’re familiar with Smash TV, it’s got a similar vibe. But honestly, what really made this game special was the two-player co-op. Playing with a friend was just a blast!
Unlike many games from that time, you can play Pocky & Rocky as long as you want, which makes its two-player mode perfect for helping new players learn how to play these kinds of games. Players can even team up to do extra damage by sliding into each other! It’s also a brighter, more colorful game than most others from the era, making it a good choice for younger gamers.
3) Contra 3: Alien Wars

Contra 3 builds on the classic Contra and Super Contra gameplay, taking the action to a whole new level. Players battle through six stages to stop an alien invasion. Most stages are played with traditional side-scrolling action, but two stages switch to an overhead view for a surprising change of pace. The game also features impressive use of Mode 7 graphics, making it one of the best-looking games on the system.
One particularly memorable level has you battling enemies while clinging to a missile – it really captures the over-the-top action feel of movies from the late 80s and early 90s, like Terminator and Predator. Many fans consider this to be the high point of the Contra series. The game offers enough strategic gameplay to stay engaging, and its impressive visuals take it to the next level.
2) Super Turrican 2

Factor-5 began by creating games similar to R-Type, and this experience led them to develop the Amiga version of a popular arcade game. They then gained recognition for their excellent Turrican series.
Although technically the fifth Turrican game (Factor-5 developed three earlier titles), Super Turrican 2 is widely considered the best. It cleverly redesigned levels to showcase the SNES’s Mode 7 graphics, creating a visually impressive run-and-gun experience. The addition of a grapple hook further enhances gameplay and makes this a standout title for the system.
1) Mega Man X2

Honestly, you really can’t go wrong with almost any Mega Man game on the SNES! They’re all fantastic. I’d happily put Mega Man 7, Mega Man X, Mega Man X2, and Mega Man X3 on a list of the best. I even have a soft spot for Mega Man’s Soccer, though it doesn’t quite fit what we’re looking for here.
Simply put, the Mega Man series was still incredibly strong on the Super Nintendo. All four games are fantastic, and I could have easily included them all on this list. However, I’ve chosen to highlight just one, leaving it up to you to decide which is your favorite. Regardless, Mega Man continued to be the leading run-and-gun series, even after transitioning to the Super Nintendo.
