The original PlayStation was a pioneer in bringing 3D graphics to video games. Its use of discs instead of cartridges also gave game developers much more storage space to work with. This allowed for the creation of new game types, and developers began to create games with more mature themes, taking advantage of the improved visual capabilities. As the industry expanded, developers started focusing on crafting truly scary games with dark and intense stories.
These are six of the most mature and unsettling games released for the original PlayStation. It’s important to note we’re not just focusing on how scary they are, but rather how they challenged expectations for a console often associated with kids’ games.
6) Shadow Man

Originally a comic book published by Valiant Comics, Shadow Man later came under the ownership of Acclaim. They revamped the series by changing the main character and brought on acclaimed writer Garth Ennis. In 1999, Acclaim also released a well-regarded video game that was known for being challenging and dark.
The game begins with Jack the Ripper discovering his murders aren’t enough to achieve the supernatural power he desires. He then encounters an entity called Legion, who convinces him to create an asylum for other killers. From there, things quickly escalate, and the hero, Michael LeRoi, must journey into the afterlife to destroy the asylum.
5) OverBlood

OverBlood doesn’t quite measure up to the best survival horror games. Its gameplay feels a little repetitive, and you’ll often find yourself simply walking through corridors looking for the next puzzle. This was a common issue with games from that era that tried to do too much.
OverBlood was a pioneering survival horror game, notable for its fully 3D environments – a step beyond the pre-rendered backgrounds of games like Resident Evil. While it didn’t fully achieve its ambitious goals, OverBlood offers a compelling experience as you navigate a disturbing sci-fi setting. Though it doesn’t boast a huge number of frightening creatures, the unsettling story and implications of the events at the Arctic base are genuinely chilling.
4) Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

The third Resident Evil game stands out due to its memorable villain. While all Resident Evil games are frightening, this one becomes particularly unsettling as you uncover the story and what’s really happening.
Okay, so the Nemesis is seriously next-level scary. It’s not just that he’s chasing me around the city – my heart was pounding every time he showed up! But honestly, seeing him take down members of my team was brutal. And even though Nemesis is terrifying, I think Nikolai Zinoviev is actually the most unsettling character in Jill’s story. Oh, and just to top it all off, the game ends with Raccoon City getting completely destroyed. Let’s just say it’s not a feel-good ending.
3) Nightmare Creatures

Nightmare Creatures isn’t the most polished game when it comes to gameplay, like some others on this list. While the PlayStation version plays the best, even it has clunky controls and a frustrating camera.
We’re focusing on spooky games here, and on PlayStation, Nightmare Creatures really delivers. The game features a cult obsessed with the devil, attempting to control London through disturbing experiments. This eventually leads to a character inspired by the occultist Aleister Crowley releasing terrifying monsters into the city. And believe me, things only get more intense from there.
2) Echo Night

Many people don’t realize that FromSoftware, the creators of games like Elden Ring and Dark Souls, also made a series of first-person horror adventures. There are four games in the Echo Night series: two were released on the original PlayStation, one on the PlayStation 2, and another on the PSP. If you’re interested in seeing where FromSoftware started, these games are a great place to begin.
In Echo Night, you investigate your father’s home and the strange vanishing of a ship named the Orpheus. Your search will eventually lead you aboard the ship itself, where you’ll attempt to help the spirits of those who were lost. Be warned: not all of these spirits are friendly, and a potentially possessed serial killer adds to the danger. It’s a journey you won’t soon forget.
1) Silent Hill

While the first Silent Hill isn’t as popular as the second game, Harry Mason’s story is still captivating. Also, since Silent Hill 2 came out on the PlayStation 2, it doesn’t fit the scope of this list. The original Silent Hill clearly takes inspiration from Resident Evil, but it focuses more on creating a frightening psychological experience than on action and fighting monsters.
While Silent Hill does have some startling moments, it’s more focused on creating a deeply disturbing and oppressive atmosphere that gradually builds fear. It’s a truly unsettling experience that will stay with you long after you finish playing, and could even give you nightmares if you’re not ready for it.
