6 Hardest Bosses in God of War History

The God of War games feature Kratos, a legendary warrior, so it’s no surprise that the developers at Santa Monica Studio designed powerful and challenging bosses to oppose him. Throughout the series, many bosses have tried to defeat Kratos, but only a select few have truly proven themselves as worthy opponents.

Here are the six hardest bosses in God of War history.

6) Odin – God of War: Ragnarok

The last boss in God of War: Ragnarok is incredibly challenging. Odin appears as an elderly man, which might make you think he’ll be an easy fight, but don’t be fooled! He uses a huge variety of powerful attacks thanks to his divine abilities. To win, you’ll need to become skilled at fighting from a distance, or he’ll defeat you quickly.

To make things even harder, you fight Odin immediately after beating Thor, leaving no time to recover. This means you’re thrown right into a challenging, multi-stage battle against the toughest boss required in Ragnarok. Your best bet is to avoid his spear and the damage from the Bifrost. While checkpoints after each phase offer a small reprieve, it’s still an incredibly grueling fight.

5) Hades – God of War 3

Hades appears early in God of War 3, but he’s a surprisingly tough boss. He’s one of the most challenging enemies Kratos faces in a game known for its difficult battles. The fight with Hades happens in three stages, and each stage has unique challenges to overcome.

Kratos’s claw attacks are incredibly powerful and can quickly deplete your health if you don’t dodge them. To make things even harder, Hades also summons undead spirits, adding to the chaos. While not the most difficult boss fight in God of War 3, it’s certainly one of the toughest.

4) Ares – God of War

The last boss in the first God of War game is a difficult, three-part battle. You’ll first fight Ares himself, who attacks with powerful, unavoidable area attacks and quick strikes that are hard to evade. Once you defeat him, you’ll then have to defend your family from waves of copies of Kratos.

This part of the game is especially frustrating. It’s really challenging to deal with so many enemies and keep your family safe at the same time. If you make it through that, you’ll face a final battle against Ares. While this last fight isn’t as hard as the second phase, you still need to play aggressively to win.

3) Zeus – God of War 3

The last boss in God of War 3 is the most important battle you’ll face. While the next two bosses are optional, meaning you can choose whether or not to fight them, Zeus is essential. This climactic fight perfectly concludes the original God of War trilogy with a challenging, three-part encounter.

The first part of the battle transforms God of War 3 into something like a fighting game, limited to a small fighting area. The second part cleverly references the epic fight between Kratos and Zeus in God of War 2. During this phase, your main goal is simply to stay alive until Gaia returns, so focus on moving around. The final stage throws waves of Zeus clones and powerful area-of-effect attacks at you. Like the battle against Ares, you also have to protect Gaia from taking damage, which makes this last phase both challenging and potentially infuriating.

2) Gna – God of War: Ragnarok

Gna is a challenging optional boss you can face after finishing the main story of God of War: Ragnarok. Because you’ll have all of Kratos’ abilities, the developers at Santa Monica Studio were able to make this fight particularly difficult, offering one final test for players before they finish the game.

The developers delivered on their promise, creating Gna as one of the quickest and most challenging bosses in any God of War game. Her unpredictable movements and wide range of attacks – including sweeping strikes, dives from the air, and energy projectiles – make her a formidable opponent. While incredibly difficult, some players feel she borrows too much from a superior boss fight in the 2018 God of War game, preventing her from being the absolute best.

1) Sigrun, Valkyrie Queen – God of War (2018)

Gna is a challenging enemy Valkyrie who you’ll likely face repeatedly. Sigrun, the Valkyrie Queen, is considered one of the hardest bosses in recent games. Before you can fight her, you first have to defeat eight other Valkyries – a tough task in itself. Sigrun then combines the abilities of all the previous Valkyries, and adds even more attacks to her repertoire.

She constantly changes her fighting style, keeping you guessing and making her unpredictable. Plus, her attacks are now much stronger, so you can lose all your health incredibly quickly if you aren’t careful. This battle is the hardest one in the entire God of War game, and it’s not even a contest.
