6 Hardest Bosses in Zelda History

The Legend of Zelda is a classic Nintendo series that has been around for decades. Over the years, the kingdom of Hyrule has faced many villains, giving the hero Link a huge collection of enemies. However, some of these monsters are particularly tough and provide a real challenge for players, especially when they experience the games for the first time.

Here are the six toughest bosses in The Legend of Zelda‘s history.

6) Moldorm – The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Ugh, Moldorm just gets me. He perfectly embodies all the bosses in Zelda that are just… infuriating! It’s not always about difficulty, you know? Like, Mothula’s arena with all those moving spikes? Or being stuck fighting Gyorg underwater? Those fights aren’t necessarily the hardest, but they’re the ones that make you want to throw your controller! Seriously, so frustrating.

Moldrom is the final, most challenging version of this enemy. He’s a huge worm that moves quickly within a small area, and he only has one spot where you can actually damage him. Hitting him anywhere else will push you back, and you could even fall off the arena, forcing you to start the battle all over. Once you figure out the strategy, the fight becomes manageable, but even experienced players can have trouble staying on the platform.

5) Onox – The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

Onox is the last boss you face in Oracle of Seasons, and Nintendo made sure he was a tough opponent. Surprisingly, most players find his initial phase to be the hardest part of the fight – which is saying something, since he transforms into a dragon in the next phase!

The first part of the fight involves facing Onox, a heavily armored boss who can only be hurt by spinning attacks. You’ll have to build up these attacks while avoiding his powerful morning star. Once you’ve hit him a few times, Onox will summon Din, who’s stuck inside a bouncing crystal. Hitting the crystal will cause you a lot of damage, so be careful! This phase is quite challenging and frustrated many players on their Game Boy Color.

4) Gleeok – The Legend of Zelda

The original Zelda game could be genuinely scary. While several enemies were frightening, the dragon Gleeok was the worst. The first time you encounter it, it attacks with two heads, firing fast, unavoidable fireballs. But it’s the second encounter that really makes it stand out as terrifying.

Dodging the fireballs from the two-headed boss was already challenging. The next fight makes it even harder with four heads! Cutting off a head doesn’t stop it – instead, it flies around, giving you another thing to avoid. You really need quick reflexes in this fight, or you’ll be overwhelmed quickly.

3) Vaati – The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Vaati is a lesser-known boss in the Zelda series, but his battle is still quite challenging. The fight unfolds in three stages, each presenting unique difficulties. Nintendo cleverly increases the intensity throughout the battle, forcing players to utilize all their skills and items to win.

Vaati offers a fantastic take on the traditional Ganon battle. Similar to Ganon himself, Vaati constantly teleports and fires projectiles, keeping players engaged and challenged. Since I haven’t included a dedicated Ganon fight on this list – though the battle in Tears of the Kingdom was a strong contender – Vaati effectively fills that role.

2) Monk Maz Koshia – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Monk Maz is an optional boss battle in Breath of the Wild, and a lot of players never encounter him. But if you do choose to fight him, be prepared for a challenge! He can create copies of himself, has incredibly fast and difficult-to-avoid attacks, and hovers in the air, making it hard to hit him.

Luckily, by the time you face Monk Maz, you’ll likely have made significant progress in Breath of the Wild. This means you’ll have plenty of helpful items and improved abilities. Even so, this fight is genuinely challenging, proving that modern Zelda games can still be quite difficult.

1) Thunderbird – Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

The bosses in Zelda II were incredibly challenging – some could easily have filled this entire list! Dark Link and Helmethead are consistently ranked among the hardest bosses in the Zelda series, and rightfully so. However, to keep things varied, I decided to only include one boss per game.

In my opinion, Thunderbird is the hardest enemy in Zelda II. Dark Link is a close second, but the fight becomes much easier once you learn a simple trick to avoid damage. Thunderbird, however, is truly difficult – almost impossible without the Lightning spell. Even with the spell, it’s a tough battle. It constantly shoots fireballs that are hard to dodge, and you have to hit its head to do any damage, which is tricky when you’re also trying to avoid getting hit. It’s the perfect boss to represent the challenge of Zelda II, so it deserves the top spot on this list.
