6 Hardest Nintendo 64 Levels Ever

The Nintendo 64 was a challenging console for developers. As Nintendo’s first attempt at 3D gaming, it featured a unique controller that felt strange to most players. While it worked well in some games, it also made others feel clunky and awkward. Combined with the console’s technical limitations and some unusual game designs, many N64 games were notoriously difficult. In fact, some levels felt almost impossible, leading many players to give up in frustration.

Here are the six hardest levels in Nintendo 64 history.

6) First Ride – Superman 64

Superman 64 is famously bad – and incredibly frustrating to play. It’s often considered one of the worst games on the Nintendo 64, and you’ll quickly understand why. The awkward controls are immediately apparent, especially when you first try to navigate Superman through the opening ring course.

Honestly, it just doesn’t get any better after the first level. Most people figured that out pretty quickly – they’d rather go back to playing Superman 64 than deal with this game any longer! Sure, the later levels might be a bit more challenging, but that first level, ‘First Ride’, completely ruined any chance of me thinking this was going to be a fun game. It just made a terrible first impression and killed all hope.

5) Maian SOS – Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark is a fantastic game that builds on the success of GoldenEye 007. Rare took what made GoldenEye great and created a brand new experience with a stylish introduction to the protagonist, Joanna Dark, and even more exciting action.

The bonus mission, ‘Maian SOS,’ presents a unique challenge where many of your usual skills are unavailable. You play as an alien named Elvis and must escape from Area 51. You begin the mission with no weapons and very little health, meaning you need to quickly disarm guards or you’ll be defeated. Adding to the difficulty, Elvis has a large head, making him an easy target for enemies.

4) Ord Mantell Junkyard – Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

The game starts with you riding a speeding train. You’ll need precise timing to duck and jump over obstacles as they rush by. It’s already challenging, but then enemies appear, making it even harder to keep track of everything happening around you.

The game isn’t over yet! After the main section, you’ll face IG-88, a bounty hunter, in a boss battle. It’s widely considered one of the most challenging fights on the Nintendo 64. This difficulty is made even worse by the already hard and confusing train level you have to complete right before it.

3) Asteroid/Final Showdown – Jet Force Gemini

Reaching the very end of Jet Force Gemini is a serious challenge. You have to find all 12 ship components and all 282 Tribals just to unlock the final level. And even after that, the last battle itself is incredibly difficult.

The main difficulty in this stage comes down to the final boss. Mizar is considered one of the hardest bosses on the Nintendo 64, and while the level leading up to it is challenging, the boss fight itself is what really makes this stage stand out in Jet Force Gemini. It’s not quite the best stage overall, but don’t underestimate how tough Jet Force Gemini‘s final level is.

2) Rusty Bucket Bay – Banjo-Kazooie

Many Banjo-Kazooie fans find certain levels particularly difficult. While Click Clock Wood is long and can be frustrating, I think Rusty Bucket Bay presents the biggest challenge in the whole game.

The Engine Room is notoriously difficult – it’s one of the most challenging sections Rare has ever designed. Many players will likely spend hours trying to complete it, especially with the tricky water and demanding jumps. It’s a level that’s bound to test everyone’s patience. While Click Clock Wood can be a bit of a long level, it’s generally manageable during your first time playing.

1) Greenwood Village (Silver Coin Challenge) – Diddy Kong Racing

Several levels in Diddy Kong Racing are particularly challenging. The races against Wizpig are some of the most difficult boss battles on the Nintendo 64. The octopus race is another tough challenge, demanding almost flawless skill and smart tactics.

In my opinion, the Silver Coin Challenges are the hardest races in Diddy Kong Racing. You have to collect every coin and win the race, which is a tough combination. It’s nearly impossible to get all the coins in one lap, so you have to spread the collecting over multiple laps while still managing to stay near the front and use your sprint at the end. It requires a very precise strategy, and most players will fail many times before mastering it.
