Black Bolt is famous for his incredible power – a single throat-clear can destroy a city! But he’s just one example of the many powerful Inhumans who can go toe-to-toe with any hero or villain in the Marvel Universe. First appearing in Fantastic Four #45 (1965), the Inhumans were introduced as a secret society ruled by a superpowered Royal Family. Though Medusa, one of the Royal Family, briefly appeared earlier as a villain with amnesia, she later recovered her memories and helped establish the Inhumans as one of Earth’s most formidable teams. They’ve consistently demonstrated their strength over the years, most recently in the Imperial series, where Black Bolt’s actions sparked a war that reshaped the power structure of the entire Marvel cosmic universe.
Marvel Comics features many Inhumans with incredible abilities. Here’s a ranking of the ten most powerful, including both members of the Royal Family and those outside of it.
10) Triton

Triton is a remarkably strong Inhuman with powers centered around water, similar to Namor. While both become incredibly powerful, Triton’s abilities are much more limited when he’s out of the water. Unlike Namor, who simply becomes weaker on land, Triton can’t breathe air for very long and needs to stay submerged to use his powers effectively. Despite this limitation, he’s proven to be a valuable asset – he’s fought alongside the Atlanteans and often serves as an ambassador for Namor, demonstrating his importance to the Inhuman Royal Family.
9) Crystal

Crystal is the younger sister of Medusa and a member of the Inhuman Royal Family. She has the ability to control and bring to life the four elements – earth, air, fire, and water – either separately or together. While powerful enough to impact entire cities, she typically uses her abilities for large-scale control rather than direct fighting. Because of this, she often leads diplomatic efforts for her family. She was formerly married to Quicksilver, and they share a daughter named Luna. She also spent time as a member of the Fantastic Four.
8) Maximus the Mad

As a huge comic book and movie fan, I’ve always found Maximus the Mad to be a really compelling villain. He’s Black Bolt’s brother, and honestly, a lot of his bad behavior stems from being incredibly jealous of Black Bolt’s power and wanting to take over as ruler. What makes him interesting, though, is that he pretends to care about the regular Inhumans – the ones without powers – and claims he wants to fix the unfair class system the Royal Family enforces. But don’t let that fool you! It’s all about his ambition. He’s dangerous because he can control people’s minds, even wiping their memories temporarily. And he wasn’t just a bystander in the war detailed in the Imperial storyline; he played a huge role, arguably just as big as Black Bolt himself.
7) Lockjaw

Lockjaw has long been known as the Inhuman Royal Family’s main mode of transportation. This massive bulldog isn’t just a ride, though – he fiercely protects them. He was created through Inhuman experiments on dogs, including his mother. Lockjaw’s teleportation abilities are incredible, allowing him to instantly move himself and up to twelve others across vast distances, even between different realities and dimensions. He can also sense when his family is in trouble, no matter how far away they are. But what many don’t realize is Lockjaw once wielded the Infinity Gauntlet, demonstrating a power far beyond simple teleportation.
6) Reader

Reader is a powerful Inhuman, though not as famous as the Royal Family. His unique ability makes whatever he reads instantly become real – reading the word “fire” could cause flames to erupt nearby. Concerned about his power, his fellow Inhumans removed his eyes. However, he adapted by learning Braille, allowing him to continue using his abilities even without sight. He’s capable of incredible feats, including healing, time travel, and even altering memories. He’s even killed someone simply by reading about the act, making him a dangerous individual. While incredibly powerful, his reliance on Braille now restricts how he can use his abilities.
5) Gorgon

Gorgon, a member of the Inhuman Royal Family and Black Bolt’s cousin, is the team’s powerhouse. His legs are uniquely formed like those of a bull, allowing him to create incredibly powerful shockwaves with each stomp – strong enough to cause earthquakes and defeat even super-strong enemies. Beyond this ability, Gorgon possesses immense strength and resilience, making him a formidable close-combat fighter. He serves as Black Bolt’s bodyguard and mentors new Inhumans, and has a proven track record against powerful foes, including battles with heroes like The Thing.
4) Medusa

Medusa, also known as Medusalith Amaquelin, is the queen of the Inhumans and wife of Black Bolt. She has the incredible ability to control her hair with her mind, making it strong as steel and able to grow much longer than normal. She uses this power to fight enemies, lift heavy objects, and restrain opponents. As queen, Medusa is a powerful political figure who acts as Black Bolt’s voice and leads the Inhumans when he is unable to. She has even worked with the Fantastic Four and demonstrated her strength leading the Inhumans in conflicts, such as their war against the X-Men.
3) Ahura Boltagon

Ahura Boltagon is the son of Black Bolt and Medusa, born without the approval of the Genetic Council. Like his father, he possesses a powerful sonic scream, which he first demonstrated as an infant, and is now unaffected by it. As he matured, Ahura developed a deadly gaze that can instantly kill anyone he looks at, and he can also unleash destructive energy beams from his eyes. He’s also a powerful telepath, able to read the minds of both humans and animals, making him incredibly strong. However, his lack of experience is currently his biggest weakness.
2) Karnak

Karnak is the most skilled fighter in the Inhuman Royal Family and is virtually unbeatable. He possesses a unique ability to instantly identify any weakness – in objects, people, or even complex systems. Combined with his mastery of martial arts, he can defeat even stronger superpowered opponents with a single blow, or even break steel with minimal force. Remarkably, his powers weren’t granted by the Terrigen Mists; he developed them naturally as a teenager. Essentially, as long as an opponent has a vulnerability, Karnak can exploit it to win.
1) Black Bolt

Karnak is a formidable fighter, but Black Bolt is the most powerful Inhuman. His voice is incredibly destructive – even a whisper can demolish a building, and speaking directly to someone can disintegrate them. A full shout is equivalent to a nuclear explosion, and at his peak, he’s rumored to be capable of destroying planets. As the King of the Inhumans, Black Bolt’s immense powers, combined with his political authority, make him a truly dangerous and influential leader.
