6 Hardest Sega Genesis Games That You Could Easily Beat Today

The Sega Genesis was a strong rival to the Super Nintendo, offering many popular games. Although it wasn’t known for being quite as brutally difficult as Nintendo consoles, the Genesis still had plenty of challenging titles. Interestingly, some of those once-hard games are now easier to beat. Today’s players have access to helpful resources like game guides and save states, which make older, difficult games much more manageable.

There used to be six Sega Genesis games that were notoriously difficult, but they’re surprisingly manageable today.

6) Phantasy Star 2

Phantasy Star 2 is a good example of RPGs from that time period. Back then, players often needed a strategy guide to get through challenging games, or they had to figure things out on their own. Phantasy Star 2 was especially difficult, with dungeons that were confusing and frustrating for many players.

While older versions of Phantasy Star 2 could be very challenging, modern guides make the game much easier to navigate. This also means you’ll have an easier time with the enemies. Because you won’t get lost trying to figure out the dungeons, you’ll likely die less often. Beating the game will still take time, but it’s a lot more enjoyable now.

5) Fatal Labyrinth

Fatal Labyrinth is a challenging old-school dungeon crawler, and it’s notoriously difficult to learn without guidance. The game features complicated systems and fast-paced combat, making it overwhelming even in the beginning. You’ll likely feel lost and bombarded by enemies from the very start.

While still a challenging game with relentless enemies, learning Fatal Labyrinth is now much easier thanks to modern guides. Watching a YouTube video can quickly explain the game’s mechanics and make it more approachable.

4) Ecco the Dolphin

Ecco the Dolphin is a challenging game where you control a dolphin and solve puzzles, but you also have to constantly watch your air supply. If you don’t reach an air source in time while navigating the levels, your dolphin will drown and you’ll have to restart.

Honestly, Ecco isn’t so much hard as it is… frustrating! Even when it first came out in the ’90s, people usually figured it out eventually. And now? Save states make getting through it so much easier. But even if you didn’t use those, the music is incredible – it’s a game you won’t totally regret playing, even if you’re struggling!

3) Kid Chameleon

Kid Chameleon is a typical platformer game. While it didn’t really innovate, it was a good choice for fans of the Genesis. It’s remembered as one of the most challenging Genesis games because it has over 100 levels without any save points.

You’ll need to beat the game from start to finish without stopping. While there are a few shortcuts, you’ll still face over 50 difficult platforming levels. Luckily, modern players can use save states, which makes the game much less frustrating than the original Kid Chameleon. It’s still challenging, but saving your progress makes it a lot more doable.

2) Comix Zone

Okay, so Comix Zone on the Genesis is seriously one of the coolest-looking games ever. The story is wild – you’re a comic book artist who somehow gets pulled inside your own comic! It’s a pretty quick action game, but man, it’s tough. Your character is super fragile, barely able to take a hit. And here’s the kicker – every time you attack, you lose health too! It really makes you think about every move you make.

It feels like the creators of Comix Zone intentionally made the game difficult. Penalizing players for fighting back seems like an odd decision. Luckily, modern versions allow for a lot of customization. With save states and cheats, you can easily beat Comix Zone in an afternoon.

1) Altered Beast

As a big fan of classic games, I always think of Altered Beast when I remember those old beat ’em ups. They were really made to feel like the arcade versions, and let me tell you, those arcades were designed to drain your pockets! They’d throw everything at you just to get another quarter. Whether it was Altered Beast or Streets of Rage, the Genesis had no shortage of games that would really test your skills – and your patience!

These older games were originally very challenging, but features like save states have made them much easier to complete. While playing without assistance remains difficult, being able to quickly reload levels significantly reduces the overall challenge. Even for players aiming for a legitimate playthrough, save states allow for practicing tough sections without replaying the early parts of the game. This makes many beat ’em ups from that time beatable in just a couple of weekends.
