It’s common for critics and audiences to disagree about movies and TV shows, but the film Em: A Love Tale really highlights that divide. There’s been very little consensus about whether it’s any good!
Reviewers largely disliked the film, giving it a disappointing 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after over 100 reviews. While not a complete failure, it didn’t receive positive feedback.
But, and this is key, , and that’s what matters most.
Viewers overwhelmingly loved Dracula: A Love Tale, giving it an 81% approval rating based on over 1,000 reviews – ten times more than professional critics. The film’s popularity continues to grow, and it recently ranked among the top 10 most-watched movies on several streaming platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, Google, and STARZ, even reaching number one in multiple countries.
Dracula: A Love Tale Is a Rare Look at His Vulnerability
It seems you can’t keep a vengeful Vlad down.
The film features Caleb Landry Jones, a Texas actor known from shows like Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad, as Dracula. He’s joined by acclaimed actor Christoph Waltz. The story follows Dracula on an adventure that’s similar in tone and action to the popular Castlevania anime series on Netflix – expect plenty of violence and excitement!
Okay, so this movie is seriously intense. It’s about a guy whose wife is tragically killed, and he’s absolutely devastated. He gets so angry, he actually turns against God and decides he’s going to get revenge. But it doesn’t stop there – he’s also obsessed with bringing her back to life, and in a really wild twist, he ends up becoming Dracula! Zoë Bleu, who I’ve seen in Signs of Love and Gonzo Girl, plays the lost love, and I’m already hooked just hearing the premise.
Bleu shared in an interview with Manny the Movie Guy that those around her character don’t realize Dracula isn‘t a villain. He doesn’t try to control her, but instead allows her to be free, because true love isn’t about ownership.
A Vengeful Dracula Is the Most Dangerous
Bleu points out that the Dracula we usually see in movies isn’t quite accurate. He says this version is surprisingly selfless and a departure from the historical figure of Vlad the Impaler, who was known for being quite the opposite.
Luc Besson, the French director behind films like The Fifth Element and Lucy, is bringing a new take on Dracula to the screen in 2025. He previously collaborated with Caleb Landry Jones on Dogman and has now cast him as Dracula. Opposite him will be Bleu, who describes Besson as a visionary – a “world creator” – due to his remarkable imagination.
While critics don’t think Dracula: A Love Tale is as good as classics like Nosferatu (2024) or Interview With the Vampire (1994), viewers are disagreeing. It’s worth checking out to see what you think!
Dracula: A Love Tale is currently available to stream on all PVOD platforms.
