Shooter games have become incredibly popular over the last few decades, with titles like Call of Duty and Halo leading the way. While many players know the biggest hits, there are also some fantastic, lesser-known shooter games worth checking out. Below, you’ll find six hidden gems that are still available on today’s gaming systems. We only included games that are currently easy to find – so if your favorite underrated shooter isn’t on the list, it’s likely due to the publisher making it hard to get.
Here are six hidden gem shooters you should still play today.
6) Star Wars: Dark Forces

Dark Forces is essentially Star Wars’ take on the popular game Doom. Seeing Doom’s success, LucasArts decided to create their own first-person shooter. The game puts you in control of Kyle Katarn as he uncovers and attempts to shut down the dangerous Dark Trooper Project.
This classic shooter was popular in the 90s and is still readily available today thanks to a 2024 update by Nightdive Studios. The remaster boasts improved graphics and gameplay enhancements, though players can also switch back to the original look if they prefer. Nightdive is known for its excellent remakes, and this one is among their best.
5) The Darkness 2

In The Darkness 2, you reprise your role as Jackie Estacado, a mob hitman with powerful, demon-like arms. The game uniquely blends intense shooting with RPG features, creating a really enjoyable experience. Add a compelling story full of mob intrigue, dark humor, and even romance, and you’ve got a shooter that’s well worth playing.
Great news – this game from 2012 is now available on PC through Steam, making it easy to get! It’s also playable on many consoles thanks to backwards compatibility. However you choose to play, experiencing Jackie’s story is definitely worthwhile.
4) Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

The Call of Juarez games have had their share of hits and misses. A turning point was when the developers, Techland, briefly moved away from the Western theme with The Cartel. Luckily, they returned to the Wild West for Gunslinger, which proved to be a strong and satisfying conclusion to the series.
You can play Gunslinger on PC and most consoles, and it was even updated for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. The Switch version stays true to the original game that fans love, making it perfect for playing while traveling.
3) Timesplitters: Future Perfect

The Timesplitters series doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. It’s a shame, really, because these games have always offered incredibly robust and fun multiplayer experiences. There’s a ton of content packed into each Timesplitters game, providing players with hours of top-notch shooting action.
I think Future Perfect is the strongest of the Timesplitters games, mainly due to its incredibly fun and unpredictable single-player story. It’s packed with characters you won’t forget, and all three Timesplitters titles are still available – and affordable – on PlayStation 5.
2) Black

Black is a concise and impactful shooter. Criterion Games aimed for realism, borrowing impressive gun effects and sounds from popular films. While it lacks multiplayer and the story is brief, the thrilling, movie-like action makes it a worthwhile experience.
As an Xbox gamer, I’m so happy to see Black available on Game Pass! It’s awesome that we can play it without buying it separately, but having it included with our subscription is a fantastic way to experience this classic. Honestly, given how much there is to play, Game Pass feels like the perfect way to dive into Black.
1) F.E.A.R.

Many consider F.E.A.R. to be one of the most frightening video games ever made. Beyond its scares, it’s a fantastic shooting game with incredibly smart enemies. The way opponents react and work together, even today, is remarkably well-designed for a 2005 title by Monolith.
It’s easy to revisit the classic horror shooter F.E.A.R. and its sequel! Both games are available on Steam and often at a low price. If you enjoy horror or action games, this series is definitely worth checking out. F.E.A.R. was remarkably innovative for its time, and playing it now might make you lament the closure of its developer, Monolith, in 2025.
