It’s always great to see Jason Momoa in a role he excels at—playing a tough, sometimes violent character with hidden layers of complexity. He recently returned to a series he first appeared in back in 2019, and it’s quickly become popular, currently ranking as the 8th most-watched show on Netflix according to FlixPatrol.
As a movie and TV buff, I really wish The Red Road had gotten another season. It was a powerful show that explored some really heavy stuff – the way trauma gets passed down through families, social injustice, and just how far people will go for those they care about. Both main characters, Phillip Kopus (Jason Momoa) and Sheriff Harold Jensen (Martin Henderson), seemed willing to cross any line. The story kicks off with a college student vanishing, and that one disappearance starts to destroy Sheriff Jensen’s life, his family, and the Lenape tribe who live in the nearby mountains. It was gripping stuff!
The Red Road Was Good And Could Have Been Great
Although the writing isn’t consistently strong, the acting is outstanding and truly memorable. Chuck Barney from The Mercury News notes that while it doesn’t reach the level of shows like True Detective or Broadchurch, The Red Road is still above average, building suspense not through shocking twists, but through deeply rooted community issues like old grudges and hidden secrets. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com agrees, highlighting the show’s immersive atmosphere, describing a place where darkness lurks beneath a seemingly peaceful surface, complete with details like the sound of crickets and the feeling of humidity.
The show The Red Road could have been even better with another season and some fresh perspectives in its writing team. It fearlessly confronted difficult topics and didn’t shy away from portraying violence, challenging viewers to form their own opinions.
