The success of the 2014 Godzilla movie led Legendary to create a larger shared universe of monsters. This quickly expanded beyond just Godzilla, bringing back many famous creatures from Toho’s collection of kaiju. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a key film in this expansion, reintroducing iconic monsters like Mothra and Rodan to a new audience. It also showed that the world was full of these giant creatures, long hidden from view. Now, the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is continuing this growth. By focusing on a human organization that studies these monsters, the show can explore the history of the MonsterVerse in more detail and give screen time to less well-known kaiju, integrating them into the universe’s overall story.
The upcoming second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will introduce a new monster to the franchise. The official description mentions a secret village and a Titan rising from the ocean, and the trailer shows a ship being dragged underwater by huge tentacles. These details strongly suggest the return of a classic monster from Toho, one that hasn’t appeared in films for over six decades.
Is Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Using the Giant Octopus?
The Giant Octopus, nicknamed Oodako by fans, first appeared in the 1962 film King Kong vs. Godzilla. In its first appearance, it attacked Faro Island, seeking the unique berry juice used in the islanders’ ceremonies. This attack showed just how dangerous the island was before King Kong arrived and easily defeated the octopus. The monster appeared again four years later in 1966’s The War of the Gargantuas, briefly attacking a fishing boat before being quickly defeated by Gaira, a sea-dwelling Gargantua. In both films, the Giant Octopus served mainly as a way to show the dangers of the environment, acting as a dangerous creature that set the stage for the main monster to appear.
One reason the Giant Octopus isn’t as well-known as other monsters from the Toho universe is that it’s relatively realistic. While creatures like Godzilla and King Ghidorah have fantastical abilities, the Giant Octopus is simply a very large version of a real octopus. This lack of imaginative flair may have made it less popular over time. However, this realism actually makes it a great fit for the MonsterVerse, which aims for a more scientific approach. The franchise has already shown it can handle giant sea creatures with the Mire Squid in Kong: Skull Island. Plus, the legend of the Kraken – a massive, tentacled sea monster – is famous around the world, making the idea of a similar Titan in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters feel natural and believable.
