68 Years Later, Superman’s Most Cursed Piece Of Media Is Pure Nightmare Fuel

Krypto, who became popular after appearing in Superman, is a beloved superhero pet. People adore his floppy ear, tiny cape, and cheerful hop when he’s excited to see Superman or Supergirl. Known as the Dog of Steel, Krypto’s popularity is sure to increase with the release of the Supergirl movie. He’s easily the most popular animal sidekick in live-action superhero films, even better than Dogpool!

In 1958, a potentially disastrous television show called The Adventures of Superpup was thankfully canceled before it aired. Had it been allowed to continue, the show – featuring a flying dog in a cape – might have been too upsetting for audiences still reeling from past traumas. Some speculate that on another Earth, the very idea of a super-powered canine could have caused widespread panic. Thankfully, network executives intervened, preventing what could have been a truly damaging impact on both the Superman franchise and public morale.

The Adventures Of Superpup Was A Cashgrab From The Start

Look, every show needs to make money, but usually there’s someone with a creative vision behind it. Not with The Adventures of Superpup. This one felt different. Whitney Ellsworth, a DC Comics editor who also liaised with Hollywood, basically saw a way to capitalize on the success of The Adventures of Superman and squeeze out some extra advertising revenue. It wasn’t about art, it was about the bottom line, and honestly, it shows.

In 1958, the producers of The Adventures of Superman were planning two more seasons, but their plans were thrown into chaos when George Reeves, the actor who played Superman, decided not to return. Despite the show’s continued popularity, the team needed to find a way to continue without him. They didn’t seem to consider recasting the role, perhaps believing audiences wouldn’t accept a new Superman, and instead explored other options. Along with a series focused on Jimmy Olsen, producer Whitney Ellsworth proposed a rather troubling idea.

Essentially, The Adventures of Superpup was created as a cost-saving measure for new Superman content. By having all the characters wear masks, producers could easily swap out actors without needing to negotiate salaries, a concern that arose with George Reeves. The reason producer Whitney Ellsworth chose dogs as the central characters remains unclear, but it’s possible the recent introduction of Krypto the Superdog in comic books influenced the decision.

Despite its flaws, the show The Adventures of Superpup was greenlit. They planned to reuse the sets from Adventures of Superman, but instead of typical actors, they’d cast little people dressed in dog costumes. Clark Kent’s character became Bark Bent, though the other characters didn’t resemble those from the original comics – Lois Lane was reimagined as Pamela Poodle, for instance. Unfortunately, a pilot episode was filmed even though the concept was deeply flawed.

The Adventures of Superpup Looked Like A Nightmare

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more unsettling show than The Adventures of Supepup. The pilot episode was incredibly low-budget, featuring a mouse narrating from inside Bark Bent’s desk. This meant the actors’ dog masks were stiff and unnatural – their eyes didn’t blink, and their mouths barely moved. The humor was much more over-the-top and bizarre than anything in Adventures of Superman, and what sounded funny on paper – like a man in a dog costume being blown up – just didn’t land well on screen.

Ultimately, the studio made the correct decision not to pursue The Adventures of Superpup. Though short clips appeared over the years—even in color—the complete pilot episode remained unseen for decades. It was finally released as part of the 2011 Superman Anthology Blu-ray, but wasn’t included in the 2025 4K collection. Warner Bros. consistently removes any uploads of the pilot from YouTube, seemingly embarrassed by the show. If they are, that’s understandable, but it’s a fascinating piece of Superman history that deserves to be remembered.
