The 1990s produced some truly memorable movies, with films like The Matrix and Jurassic Park becoming instant classics and shaping pop culture. But beyond the blockbusters, there were also many fantastic films from that decade that didn’t get the recognition they deserved. With ten years of filmmaking, it’s not surprising that some excellent movies from the ’90s were overlooked and never quite found their audience.
Lots of fantastic thriller movies fly under the radar, and the 1990s produced a wealth of them. These suspenseful, often mysterious, stories can be incredibly captivating, and the thriller genre consistently delivers. Unfortunately, many great 1990s thrillers have been unfairly forgotten and deserve more recognition.
7) Ricochet (1991)

Given that the movie Ricochet shares a universe with Die Hard, it’s surprising it’s not more popular. Released in 1991, the film stars Denzel Washington as a Los Angeles police officer who becomes a district attorney and finds himself battling a ruthless criminal (John Lithgow). Ricochet is a well-made, exciting thriller with a strong cast and deserves more recognition as a classic 90s film.
6) Unlawful Entry (1992)

If you’re looking for fantastic ’90s thrillers you might have forgotten about, Unlawful Entry is a standout. Kurt Russell and Madeleine Stowe play a couple who become friends with a police officer (Ray Liotta) after a home invasion. However, the officer becomes dangerously obsessed with them. It’s a very suspenseful movie, and Ray Liotta delivers a particularly impressive performance as the villain, making it surprising that it’s not more widely remembered.
5) Malice (1993)

The 1990s thriller Malice, starring Nicole Kidman and Bill Pullman, is a standout film that deserves more recognition. The story follows a married couple who rent a room to a surgeon, played by Alec Baldwin, and find themselves caught up in a disturbing relationship with him. It’s a dark, creepy, and genuinely mysterious movie that will keep you guessing, but it’s largely been forgotten over the years.
4) Copycat (1995)

The 1995 thriller Copycat features a fantastic cast and a compelling story, but it’s largely been overlooked. Sigourney Weaver plays a famous criminal psychologist who hasn’t left her house in years and is terrorized by a dangerous killer. Holly Hunter, Dermot Mulroney, and Will Patton star as the police detectives trying to catch him. Beyond its exciting 90s action sequences, Copycat delivers both suspense and thrills with a distinct 90s vibe.
3) The Ninth Gate (1999)

Roman Polanski’s The Ninth Gate is a suspenseful thriller that flirts with horror, and could have been a standout film of the 1990s. Johnny Depp plays a book expert who’s hired to find a mysterious text rumored to have the power to conjure the devil. The film blends occult ideas with striking visuals of Gothic buildings and design, and Depp’s subtle yet compelling performance makes it a hidden gem of 90s thrillers.
2) The Game (1997)

David Fincher, known for directing many memorable films, created a particularly clever thriller in the 1990s called The Game. The movie stars Michael Douglas as a successful but unhappy banker who gets caught up in a strange and unsettling plot that makes him doubt everything around him. While The Game is considered one of the best thrillers of the decade, it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.
1) Breakdown (1997)

Beyond being a gripping thriller, Breakdown is a surprisingly overlooked action film from the 1990s. Kurt Russell plays a man whose wife is abducted by a truck driver after their car stalls in a secluded area while traveling across the country. The movie follows his desperate attempt to outsmart a group of ruthless criminals and rescue his wife, and despite being exciting and full of action, it’s largely been forgotten since its release in the late 90s.
