Although anime covers a huge range of styles and stories, action-packed shonen series are consistently the most popular. A key part of what makes shonen—and action anime generally—so appealing is how it portrays characters getting stronger. These power-ups are usually shown with impressive visual changes to the characters themselves.
I’ve always thought the best anime power-ups aren’t just about strength, but about how they feel – they really stick with you. Some have even become legendary! I want to share seven of those game-changing power-ups that I think truly shaped the anime world.
7) Goku’s Ultra Instinct

When it comes to characters gaining incredible power in anime, Goku from Dragon Ball is arguably the most influential. He’s become the standard for power-ups, and his latest form, Ultra Instinct, is the ultimate expression of a skilled fighter. When it first appeared, it was a massive online sensation and fundamentally changed how the Dragon Ball series approaches transformations.
For a long time, Saiyan transformations were the main way characters gained new powers. But Ultra Instinct changed things by showing that characters could achieve transformations unique to themselves. This paved the way for Gohan’s Beast form and Piccolo’s Orange form, and fans expect Vegeta to get his own special form in future episodes of Dragon Ball Super.
6) Eren’s Titan Power Up

Attack on Titan stands out as the only seinen anime on this list to feature a game-changing power-up. The story follows a hero dedicated to destroying all Titans, but the unexpected discovery that Eren himself can become a Titan dramatically altered the entire course of the series.
This revelation changed everything, suggesting that the seemingly simple Titans were actually being used as weapons in a larger political game. It’s considered one of the most shocking moments in anime, and the story that unfolded afterward was brilliantly executed.
5) Asta’s Demon Power-Up

Black Clover follows a very traditional shonen story structure, but it stands out because of its main character. In a world where everyone has magic, Asta is different – he’s born without any magical ability, making him an unusual and seemingly unremarkable person.
Ironically, Asta’s biggest weakness – his inability to use magic – is actually what gives him the power to negate magic and make a deal with a devil. This is powerfully shown in his demon form, where he fully accepts being magicless, and it fundamentally changed the world of Black Clover. Because of this, Asta has become a truly unique hero in shonen anime, known for his incredibly distinctive transformation.
4) Vegeta’s Super Saiyan 3

For years, Vegeta has always been a step behind Goku in terms of power-ups. When Goku reached Super Saiyan 3 during the fight with Buu, many fans thought Vegeta would achieve the same form, but he never did. Ever since, fans have been hoping to see Vegeta transform, and now, thanks to Daima, that wish has finally come true.
However, Daima doesn’t simply show Vegeta with the typical long, golden Super Saiyan hair. It adds special touches that make this transformation uniquely his. Combined with the fact that fans had waited decades to see Vegeta achieve this form, the moment feels incredibly satisfying and like a long-awaited dream come true.
3) Naruto’s Nine-Tails Form

Naruto is a truly exceptional hero in the world of anime, and the way his strength grew alongside his struggles is a landmark moment for the entire genre. A particularly compelling part of the story was his bond with Kurama, especially considering how dangerous and hostile Kurama initially seemed.
The moment Kurama began to trust Naruto and share his power felt central to what Naruto’s journey was all about. This wasn’t just a simple increase in strength; it showed the importance of accepting and controlling even the most challenging parts of yourself to achieve good. This concept of mastering inner darkness became a model for many anime heroes, and had a lasting impact on how stories were told in the genre.
2) Luffy’s Gear 5

Monkey D. Luffy is a hugely popular anime hero, and fans were eager to see him become even stronger in a way that truly set him apart. A typical power boost would have been predictable, so creator Eiichiro Oda surprised everyone by completely redefining how power-ups work in this genre with Luffy’s latest transformation.
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, wanted Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation to recapture the playful spirit of 90s Western cartoons – shows that didn’t take themselves too seriously. This led to Gear 5 being an incredibly powerful and imaginative form, where Luffy can literally bring anything he dreams up to life. The idea is wonderfully absurd, but it’s executed brilliantly within the story.
1) Goku’s Super Saiyan

As a huge anime fan, I have to talk about Goku going Super Saiyan! Seriously, it’s the transformation that basically set the standard for almost every other power-up in shonen anime. It’s easily one of the most iconic moments ever – I remember watching it with everyone else, and it felt like a total cultural phenomenon, even back when anime wasn’t as popular around the world. It was just that impactful!
As a huge anime fan, I truly believe Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation wasn’t just a cool moment – it basically defined how anime shows power-ups! It set the standard for visually showing a character getting stronger, and honestly, it’s the reason so many shows still use dramatic appearance changes when their heroes level up. It’s not an exaggeration to say it changed anime forever, and as long as shonen anime is around, everyone will remember it as the original and the best!
