Many anime series have become incredibly popular with fans around the globe. However, even the best franchises sometimes have seasons that don’t measure up to the rest of the show. Here at egmr.ru, we’ve ranked the worst seasons of anime, focusing on those that particularly disappointed given how strong the series originally was and how beloved it became.
7.) Death Note

Most fans agree that the first half of Death Note is stronger than the second. The deaths of key characters significantly impacted Light Yagami’s story. While these losses didn’t ruin the series entirely, they did detract from its overall quality. Death Note remains a great show, but there’s a noticeable difference between the strong start and what follows a major turning point.
6.) Rurouni Kenshin

After Kenshin’s battle with Shishio, the anime continued his story with an arc that wasn’t as strong as previous seasons of Rurouni Kenshin. Although the animation quality stayed consistent, the storyline didn’t reach the same level of excitement as before the original anime ended. The new revival series is currently revisiting earlier stories, and it makes you wonder if the creators will make changes to improve the plot if it moves beyond the Shishio arc.
5.) Blue Lock

The sports anime Blue Lock has quickly become popular, even getting a mention at the Olympics. However, the second season of the anime received criticism, not for its storyline like shows such as Death Note and Rurouni Kenshin, but because of the animation quality. One animator revealed that the second season’s production schedule was poorly managed. While a third season from Eight Bit Studio is planned, the release date is still unknown, and fans are hoping the extra time will lead to improved animation.
4.) Sword Art Online

Sword Art Online originally felt like a complete story – Kirito fighting for survival in a virtual reality game where death in the game meant real-life death. After finishing that initial adventure, which helped define the isekai genre, the series seemed to lose direction, constantly changing its setting and core ideas. While later seasons weren’t universally disliked, they never quite reached the same level of quality as the first season.
3.) Tokyo Ghoul

The anime adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul didn’t quite capture the quality of the original manga, largely due to significant changes to the story and a different ending. Many fans are hoping for a complete remake that faithfully follows Sui Ishida’s original work, starting from the beginning of Ken Kaneki’s story. Tokyo Ghoul consistently appears in discussions about anime that deserve remakes because later seasons didn’t build on the strong foundation of the first season.
2.) One-Punch Man

Many anime fans feel that One-Punch Man hasn’t lived up to its potential. The first season is widely considered a classic, but the change in animation studios from Madhouse to J.C. Staff has disappointed a lot of viewers. Despite some animation issues, the newer seasons have generally followed the original story closely. If you’re familiar with popular anime, you’ve likely already guessed which show tops this list.
1.) The Promised Neverland

Many fans consider The Promised Neverland a major disappointment in anime, and it’s easy to see why. The first season was incredibly engaging, focusing on the children at Grace Field House. However, the second season was widely disliked, to the point where some fans pretend it doesn’t exist. The problem wasn’t just the story itself, but how the anime ended. The finale rushed through important plot points from the manga, leaving many viewers frustrated. It’s clear now that The Promised Neverland has rightfully earned its reputation as a significant letdown.
