7 Avengers-Level Threats Too Big For The MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe transformed Marvel’s characters – both heroes and villains – into pop culture icons. Just like the X-Men before them, the Avengers became widely known, and arguably even more popular. While the movies didn’t always perfectly mirror the comics, they drew inspiration from classic storylines and villains – including conflicts like the Kree-Skrull war – which enhanced the films. However, the Avengers in the comics have battled enemies and overcome challenges far greater than anything seen in the movies.

Avengers comics are known for their epic, large-scale battles against Marvel’s most powerful enemies. While the Avengers we see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are strong, some of the threats from the comics – including villains, alien species, and dangerous situations – would be far too overwhelming for them. Here are seven examples of comic book threats that are best left unadapted for the screen, as they would simply be too much for the MCU heroes to handle.

7) The Kree/Shi’Ar War

As a huge Avengers fan, I remember “Operation: Galactic Storm” from the early nineties – it was a massive crossover that jumped between so many titles like Avengers, Avengers West Coast, Captain America, Quasar, Iron Man, Wonder Man, and Thor. It was a 19-part story where the Avengers got caught in the middle of a war between the Shi’Ar and Kree empires, with the Skrulls causing trouble on the side. We’ve seen stories like this before – the Kree/Skrull War is a classic – but honestly, these huge galactic conflicts feel too sprawling for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Operation: Galactic Storm” throws so many powerful enemies at the Avengers – the Shi’Ar Imperial Guard, the Kree Accusers, even the Supreme Intelligence, plus the Skrulls – and that’s just more than the current MCU team could realistically handle, in my opinion.

6) Secret Invasion‘s Skrull Invasion

Marvel fans fondly remember the comics of the 2000s, and the Secret Invasion storyline was a major highlight. It depicted the Skrulls, an alien race, finally launching their long-awaited invasion at a time when Earth’s heroes were already weakened from previous conflicts like Civil War and World War Hulk. This time, the Skrulls had a significant advantage: they could perfectly mimic the powers of Earth’s strongest heroes. With so many Skrulls possessing so many abilities, a similar invasion on the MCU Earth would be devastating – the Avengers simply wouldn’t stand a chance.

5) Red Onslaught

A long time ago, Professor X mentally erased Magneto’s memories, but the darkness within Magneto ended up inside Professor X’s mind, creating a powerful being called Onslaught, who was eventually defeated by the Avengers and X-Men. Later, Red Skull resurrected Professor X (it’s complicated!) and took the part of his brain that controlled telepathy, attaching it to his own. This transformed Red Skull into Red Onslaught, granting him god-like abilities similar to the original Onslaught. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the heroes rely on telepathic mutants to shield their minds. Without those mental defenses, the MCU heroes wouldn’t stand a chance against this incredibly powerful, Nazi villain.

4) The Apocalypse Twins

The early 2010s were exciting for Avengers fans, particularly with the introduction of Uncanny Avengers. This series uniquely combined members of the X-Men and the Avengers to face challenging new enemies, most notably the Apocalypse Twins – Eimin and Uriel. These twins, the children of Archangel and Pestilence, had a dark upbringing in a mutant concentration camp created by the Red Skull, orchestrated by Kang the Conqueror. Kang intended to use them to defeat the Avengers, but the twins had a far grander scheme. Utilizing their time-manipulating mutant abilities, Kang’s advanced weaponry, and their own intelligence, they aimed to convince the powerful Celestials to wipe out Earth, preserving only mutants. The Apocalypse Twins pose a threat far beyond anything seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Their control over time, access to Kang’s future knowledge, and incredibly durable Celestial armor would make them unstoppable, easily capable of destroying the entire MCU Earth.

3) Ex Nihilo and Abyss

Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers storyline kicked off with a truly formidable threat – one that would easily overwhelm the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The villains, Ex Nihilo and Abyss, worked for a powerful cosmic race called the Builders, who accelerated evolution on planets. They chose Mars as their base and launched missiles at Earth, intending to rapidly evolve life there. These missiles affected both the planet and any creatures caught in their blast radius. Ex Nihilo and Abyss are incredibly powerful beings, and only the most powerful Avengers team could hope to defeat them. The Avengers we see in the MCU simply aren’t strong enough to even make a dent in their defenses.

2) Michael Korvac

Michael Korvac began as a human, but evolved into a supremely powerful being, essentially a god. When the Guardians of the Galaxy from the 30th century realized they couldn’t handle him, they sought the Avengers’ assistance. Despite a combined attack, the two teams were completely outmatched – Korvac was far too powerful. He effortlessly defeated them all, but surprisingly chose to bring them back to life and simply surrendered. Considering the MCU Avengers struggled against Thanos even with the Infinity Stones, they wouldn’t have stood a chance against Korvac.

1) The Builders

The Builders are the universe’s oldest civilization, responsible for seeding life throughout the cosmos and creating a network for traveling between different universes. They used beings called Gardeners to grow life on planets and Alephs as powerful builders or destroyers. When this network began to collapse due to Incursions, the Builders launched a devastating attack on all existing empires. They were only stopped when the Avengers joined forces with the remaining fleets of the universe. The Builders represent a massive, overwhelming threat, and the MCU Avengers wouldn’t be able to defeat them. They simply lack the power, resources, and strategic thinking needed to overcome such a powerful enemy; the Builders would easily overwhelm them.
