DC Comics is famous for its mentor-sidekick relationships, but it also features some really enjoyable friendships between heroes. While DC has many great pairs, many fall into the traditional mentor role, like Batman and Robin – these don’t quite count as bromances because one hero is usually guiding or training the other. Even the dynamic between Batman and Nightwing doesn’t fit, as Batman remains the more experienced hero. However, Nightwing does share a close friendship with another hero, and the same goes for two other characters who have been Robin.
DC Comics has seen many fantastic friendships, but here’s a look at some of the very best ‘bromances,’ from Nightwing’s close bond with his best friend to other memorable pairings.
7) Red Hood & Arsenal

The unlikely pairing of Red Hood and Arsenal proved surprisingly successful. Both heroes were once cast aside by their mentors – Arsenal (formerly Speedy) was abandoned by Green Arrow due to addiction, and Red Hood (formerly Robin) was tragically killed by the Joker before being resurrected. They returned as more powerful figures and developed a strong, entertaining friendship. Their dynamic was so popular it even led to their own comic book series, which famously included a moment where Red Hood playfully acknowledged the fans who had previously voted for his character’s death. Many consider this to be the best male friendship developed during DC’s New 52 era.
6) Superman & Batman

Superman and Batman share a strong friendship, despite occasionally clashing. They deeply respect each other – Bruce Wayne understands Clark Kent, and Superman knows Batman incredibly well. They’ve always been reliable allies, even agreeing to intervene if the other ever went too far. When these two heroes fight, it’s a particularly low point for DC Comics, as the universe is much stronger when they team up.
5) Nightwing & Wally West

For years, Dick Grayson worked alongside Batman as his sidekick, while Wally West trained with Barry Allen. Together, they were among the original Teen Titans, a team formed by the sidekicks of famous heroes. Now adults, both have become respected heroes in their own right – Dick as Nightwing and Wally as the Flash – and they’ve maintained a close friendship for over five decades. Their strong bond, a classic DC Comics ‘bromance,’ consistently leads to exciting adventures and demonstrates their deep affection for one another.
4) Blue Beetle & Booster Gold

Blue Beetle and Booster Gold have a unique friendship built on playful teasing rather than typical camaraderie, and that’s what makes them such a good team. They shook up the Justice League, which was once known for its serious, respectful atmosphere, as the team’s biggest underdogs. Their dynamic was explored in the comic book series Blue and Gold, where Booster was portrayed as a boastful attention-seeker and Blue Beetle as the imaginative, often exasperated, partner. Their motto perfectly summed up their bond: “Bros before heroes.”
3) Beast Boy & Cyborg

As a huge fan of the Teen Titans, I’ve always loved the dynamic between Beast Boy and Cyborg. It’s a friendship that really jumped off the page from the original New Teen Titans comics by Wolfman and Perez – a series that seriously shook things up for DC. But honestly, it was the animated series, especially Teen Titans Go!, where their bond really shone. While their comic book friendship was always solid, in the DC animated universe, Beast Boy and Cyborg just had the best bromance, hands down. It’s amazing their connection survived even the New 52 reboot!
2) Damian Wayne & Jon Kent

What makes the friendship between Jon Kent and Damian Wayne so compelling is that they became close despite having very different personalities when they were children. Even when Jon returned from time travel as an older teenager, and Damian matured quickly as well, their bond remained strong. While they’ve grown beyond being known as the “Super Sons,” with Damian now an independent Robin and Jon taking on the mantle of Superman, they function much like Batman and Superman themselves – perfectly balanced opposites who complement each other, and likely always will.
1) Hal Jordan & Green Arrow

As a lifelong DC fan, I’ve always loved the dynamic between heroes, and while Barry Allen and Hal Jordan have a great friendship, for me, nothing beats the bond between Hal Jordan and Oliver Queen. I grew up reading those classic Green Lantern/Green Arrow comics, and their connection just felt special. What made it work so well was how different they were – Oliver was this grounded, socially conscious hero fighting for the little guy, while Hal was soaring through space as a cosmic law enforcer. Despite that, they always understood each other and had each other’s backs, when they were at their best, anyway. Barry and Hal are pals, sure, but Oliver and Hal actually pushed each other to grow and become better heroes, and that’s what truly makes them the ultimate DC bromance in my book.
