7 Best Comics of 2025

Now that the holidays are over and 2025 is ending, it’s time to look back on the year. 2025 brought a lot of fantastic entertainment, especially in comics. Whether you’re into superheroes, science fiction, or other genres, there was something for everyone, and a lot of it was truly excellent.

2025 was an amazing year for comics! We saw fresh takes on classics like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a long-awaited team-up between Marvel and DC, and some standout stories featuring Godzilla. We could talk about all our favorite titles for ages, but here are seven that consistently stood out based on our reviews. With comics this strong in 2025, we can’t wait to see what 2026 brings!

7) The Power Fantasy

I’ve been reading a lot of comics lately, and I have to say, The Power Fantasy, which came out in July, is a standout. It’s easily one of the best comics of 2025, and honestly, one of the most interesting series I’ve seen in a while. Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wijngaard have crafted something really unique – it’s a fresh and surprising take on the whole superpower concept. The story follows six people with incredible abilities, but there’s a catch: the world’s safety depends on them not fighting each other.

Okay, so this story is bold. It’s been compared to Watchmen, and you can definitely see the influence, but I’d say The Power Fantasy is actually responding to Watchmen, building on its ideas rather than just trying to be another version of it. What’s really clever is how it takes superhero tropes and flips them on their head, but the characters still feel like they belong in that world. And honestly, this title isn’t afraid to push boundaries – it just keeps raising the stakes with every issue, which is incredibly exciting.

6) Batman: Dark Patterns

As a huge comic fan, I have to say, you might be missing out on the best Batman book of 2025 if you haven’t checked out Batman: Dark Patterns yet – seriously, go read it! It actually started late last year, but most of it came out this year, so it feels fresh. And honestly, with so many Batman comics out there, this one really stands out. It’s a gem.

Dan Watters and Hayden Sherman’s Dark Patterns explores Batman’s beginnings as he tries to become Gotham City’s hero, even though the city resists him. Each issue presents a self-contained mystery, but together they reveal a bigger, disturbing story about Gotham’s dark secrets and how Batman is shaped into the hero he becomes. It’s a focused and exceptionally well-crafted Batman story, consistently strong from beginning to end – something you don’t often see.

5) Free Planet

This year, the sci-fi comic Free Planet, created by Aubrey Sitterson and Jed Dougherty, quickly became one of the best in the genre. The series takes place on Lutheria, the first planet where everyone is truly free, and follows the Freedom Guard, the group tasked with maintaining that freedom. Free Planet explores thought-provoking questions about the true meaning of complete freedom, its potential consequences, and the challenges of upholding such an abstract ideal.

Beyond its fantastic story, Free Planet is a groundbreaking comic that truly reinvents the medium. The artwork isn’t just visually stunning – it actively invites you to interact with the page, utilizing every inch of space brilliantly. It’s not just one of the best comics of the year; it could be one of the greatest comics ever made.

4) Endeavour

DSTLRY’s Endeavour quickly became a standout comic of 2025. Created by Stephanie Phillips and Mark Laming, this gripping story of survival at sea, reminiscent of Lord of the Flies and Yellowjackets, masterfully combines social issues, historical details, and a chilling mystery. It explores classic themes in a fresh and engaging way, avoiding clichés.

Endeavour tells the story of a luxurious adventure on an 18th-century ship that takes a dark turn. When disaster strikes, a group of children are the only survivors and must face terrifying challenges in a desperate fight for survival. The book offers a truly unique and captivating ghost story experience, unlike anything else you’ll find.

3) The Mortal Thor

Among Marvel’s individual comic series launching in 2025, Thor is easily one of the strongest. Following the events of Immortal Thor, the original Thor has died, and Sigurd Jarlson is now living on Earth without his powers, reputation, or memories. Written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Pasqual Ferry, the series has been consistently excellent, offering a compelling new direction for this iconic character.

Readers consistently praise this book for its excellent pacing and the way its mystery gradually unfolds. The story is captivating on its own, relying on intriguing details and subtle developments rather than constant action. It’s a complex and brilliantly reimagined tale that keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

2) Star Trek: The Last Starship

Comics tied to long-running, popular franchises can be difficult to pull off, but IDW Publishing really succeeded this year with Star Trek: The Last Starship. Created by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lansing, this series tackles a famous event in Star Trek history, cleverly reintroduces a beloved character, and delivers a Star Trek comic experience that’s surprisingly fresh and exciting.

What really sets Star Trek: The Last Starship apart is that it’s a compelling Star Trek story that’s easy for anyone to enjoy, even if they aren’t deeply familiar with the franchise. As we mentioned in our review of the first issue, knowing details like ‘The Burn’ adds to the experience, but it’s not required to get invested. Plus, the story continues to improve and become more captivating with each new issue.

1) Absolute Batman

Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman is poised to be one of the best comic books of 2025, and for good reason. This fresh take on the classic hero has revitalized DC Comics and offers incredibly inventive versions of well-known characters. While the entire Absolute series has been fantastic, Absolute Batman has consistently captivated readers and continues to be a standout title.

Every issue of Absolute Batman takes the craziness to a new level, and that’s really saying something! We’ve seen a heartbreaking new take on Batman’s beginnings, devastating changes for his allies that bring them closer to the versions we know from the main Batman stories, and terrifying new versions of classic villains like Bane and the Joker. The Joker’s new origin story, in particular, is a fascinating look at wealth and power, and it completely flips how we understand Batman in the regular comics. It’s over-the-top, epic in scope, and completely captivating.
