X-Factor first appeared in the mid-1980s, at the peak of the X-Men’s popularity. The team reunited the original five X-Men – Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel – with the goal of helping other young mutants, just as Professor X had helped them. Their initial adventures pitted them against the villain Apocalypse, introducing him to the wider Marvel Universe. Eventually, the team rejoined the main X-Men lineup, but they didn’t disappear. Instead, X-Factor evolved, becoming a government-funded team and later changing again – even operating as a detective agency (on two separate occasions) and a corporate-sponsored group.
Over the years, X-Factor has become a truly iconic X-Men team, captivating readers with its memorable stories. While many powerful mutants have been members, seven stand out as the very best, the heroes who built X-Factor’s legendary reputation.
7) Strong Guy

Guido, known as Strong Guy, wasn’t one of the most famous mutants, but he played a key role in bringing the X-Men and X-Factor teams together during the events on Muir Island. Recruited by Valerie Cooper for the new X-Factor, he was the team’s powerhouse and a consistently funny presence. His powers allowed him to absorb energy and become stronger, but also put him in constant danger, giving him a unique and lively outlook on life. He’s become such a familiar part of X-Factor that the team doesn’t quite feel right without him.
6) Archangel

Angel was often seen as the weakest member of the X-Men. While he had wealth and the ability to fly thanks to his wings and lightweight bones, his powers were limited at first. When he joined X-Factor just to spend time with his friends, it turned out to be a bad decision. During the “Mutant Massacre,” his wings were brutally severed, leading him to attempt suicide. However, Apocalypse intervened, transforming him into Death, the strongest of his Horsemen. Surprisingly, this was a turning point for the character. As the transformed Archangel, he became a far more compelling and well-liked hero, and his time with X-Factor demonstrated his potential.
5) Polaris

Polaris has a strong connection to the X-Men, largely because of her relationship with Havok. She’s joined the team on multiple occasions, often following Havok, and her time with them is considered a high point for the character. Being part of the X-Men allowed Polaris to develop beyond being defined by her relationship and truly grow as an individual. She became a powerful and respected member, utilizing her magnetic abilities, and consistently supported Havok. She continued to be part of various X-Men lineups, including the recent Krakoan era, and remains a key figure in the history of the team, especially when fans think of X-Factor.
4) Jean Grey

Jean Grey is a central figure for the X-Men, considered by many to be their guiding spirit. Though she famously died in “The Dark Phoenix Saga” and remained absent for a long time, she eventually returned to life. This resurrection played a key role in bringing the X-Men together. During her time away and upon her return, Jean matured significantly, taking on a mentor role for younger mutants and helping to raise Nathan Summers, the son of Cyclops and a copy of herself named Madelyne Pryor. This journey helped her become a more complete character and allowed her to confidently rejoin the X-Men.
3) Cyclops

Cyclops was one of the original X-Men and served as their leader for many years. After the death of Jean Grey, he married a clone of her, but when the real Jean Grey returned, he reactivated his ruby quartz visor (which was different from the ruby quartz glasses he’d been wearing). He then led the team X-Factor through some of their most important conflicts, sporting some memorable costumes along the way. During his time with X-Factor, he shaped the team’s identity and focused their mission on assisting young mutants, ultimately helping them become a well-known and respected group.
2) Havok

Havok often joined the X-Men, but always lived in his brother Cyclops’s shadow. When X-Factor became a government team, he finally got a chance to lead and prove himself. He led the team for many years, becoming a skilled commander. Although his time with the group had its ups and downs, he repeatedly returned to X-Factor, even leading its most recent version. It was the first team he ever captained, and he remains strongly associated with it.
1) Jamie Madrox

Jamie Madrox, also known as Multiple Man, started as a relatively unknown mutant working at Moira MacTaggert’s facility on Muir Island. He gained the ability to create duplicates of himself whenever he was struck. While initially the comedic relief when he joined the government team X-Factor, Madrox proved to have surprising depth. Later, he reformed X-Factor as a detective agency, and with the help of writer Peter David, became a truly exceptional mutant. Though often overlooked, Madrox is a quiet icon, and his success is largely thanks to his experiences with X-Factor.
