The movie centers on two people living in a secluded facility who discover they are clones created to provide organs for others, and their subsequent attempt to escape. Featuring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, The Island is a fun and exciting action-sci-fi film that you can currently watch on Netflix.
6) Johnny Mnemonic (1995)
Often overlooked, the 1995 sci-fi film Johnny Mnemonic is frequently overshadowed by Keanu Reeves’ more famous The Matrix from 1999. While it’s not perfect, Johnny Mnemonic boasts a unique and inventive cyberpunk style that makes it a memorable watch. It’s gained a cult following over the years, meaning many people haven’t even heard of it – and may be surprised to learn it’s currently streaming on Netflix in the US.
5) Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)
While the Transformers movies aren’t as popular as they once were, they still do reasonably well. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts wasn’t a huge hit when it came out, so it didn’t make much of a splash when it started streaming on Netflix. Most of the other Transformers films are available on different streaming services, but right now, you can watch Rise of the Beasts on Netflix.
4) Power Rangers (2017)
The Power Rangers franchise, while once hugely popular, hasn’t had a major hit in years. There was hope for a revival with the 2017 movie reboot, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but plans for a sequel were cancelled. Still, you can watch the film – simply titled Power Rangers – starring Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, Elizabeth Banks, and Bryan Cranston, on Netflix this January.
3) Elysium (2013)
Released in 2013, Neill Blomkamp’s film Elysium received generally positive reviews, though it was often compared to his earlier, highly praised work. The movie, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster with a strong supporting cast, is a thought-provoking sci-fi action film that tackles important political and social issues. Despite being a well-made film, Elysium can be easily overlooked on Netflix, but it is currently available to stream.
2) Upgrade (2018)
Despite being released only a few years ago, Upgrade is a fantastic cyberpunk film that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Directed by Leigh Whannell, it’s a thrilling blend of action and horror, centered around a man who hates technology but ends up with a powerful chip implanted in him after becoming paralyzed. It’s like a dark, cautionary tale in the style of Black Mirror combined with a gritty revenge story, and it’s currently available to stream on Netflix.
1) District 9 (2009)
This January, Netflix is adding the critically acclaimed sci-fi film District 9, the impressive first feature from director Neill Blomkamp. Widely considered one of the best sci-fi movies of the 21st century, it tells its story in a realistic, documentary-style format, tackling important themes like prejudice and social division. It’s a powerful and thought-provoking film that holds up well on repeat viewings, making it a standout choice for sci-fi fans on Netflix this month.
