7 Best Upgraded Versions of DC Heroes, Ranked

DC Comics has a reputation for featuring incredibly powerful heroes. This trend began in the early days of comics, known as the Golden Age, with characters like Alan Scott, the Spectre, and Doctor Fate possessing almost limitless abilities, while Superman’s power continued to grow. This reached its peak in the Silver and Bronze Ages, where some heroes surpassed even the gods in strength. While power levels decreased after the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, they’ve been steadily increasing again, though not quite to the extreme levels seen in the past. Enhancing heroes’ abilities has always been common in superhero comics, and some of these upgrades have made characters far more powerful than many fans realize.

These power-ups for heroes can come from future versions of themselves or from current improvements. While most are short-lived, a few have reappeared throughout the years. Here are seven of the most powerful upgraded versions of DC’s already strong heroes.

7) Swamp Thing as Avatar of the Green

Swamp Thing originally debuted during the horror boom of the 1970s as a typical swamp creature. However, writer Alan Moore dramatically changed the character. Moore introduced the concept of ‘the Green,’ a mystical force connecting all plant life, and reimagined Swamp Thing as its champion. This transformation made him one of the most formidable beings in the DC Universe, capable of defeating even incredibly powerful versions of Superman. While now integral to his identity, the Green was once a groundbreaking addition that significantly boosted his power.

6) Ion Kyle Rayner

After Hal Jordan went rogue, Kyle Rayner stepped up to become the new Green Lantern and ultimately defeated him when he transformed into Parallax. For years, Kyle bravely fought crime on his own, and later joined the reformed Green Lantern Corps when Hal Jordan returned. He earned the respect of his fellow Lanterns, and the Guardians recognized his potential by granting him the power of Ion, a powerful energy being. This made Kyle incredibly powerful, giving him unmatched control over the green energy of willpower and allowing him to achieve incredible feats. He reached the peak of his abilities, becoming a truly formidable force.

5) Hal Jordan Spectre

After the destruction of Coast City, Hal Jordan transformed into the villainous Parallax, determined to reshape the universe. Despite this dark turn, his inherent goodness eventually resurfaced, leading to a heroic sacrifice to restore the Sun during the storyline The Final Night. Later, his spirit merged with the Spectre in Day of Judgment, freeing it from the fallen angel Asmodel and becoming the incredibly powerful Spirit of Vengeance. While mostly in control, Hal faced attempts by Parallax and Sinestro to seize control, ultimately leading him to relinquish the Spirit of Vengeance and return to his role as a Green Lantern.

4) Kingdom Come Wally West

Wally West is often considered the most powerful Flash. While he’s already incredibly fast, the version of Wally shown in Kingdom Come reached a new level of power. This Wally was constantly running, protecting both Keystone and Central City, and fighting alongside the Justice League. He moved at unbelievable speeds, so fast that he could even perceive Norman McCay, who existed outside of normal reality with the Spectre. This version truly represented the peak of the Flash’s abilities – a virtually all-powerful speedster.

3) Golden Wonder Woman

The story of Dark Knights: Death Metal began with the multiverse dominated by Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs, where Wonder Woman served as their guard, protecting prisoners in exchange for their lives. Secretly, she was developing a plan to defeat Perpetua by using the energies of past and prevented crises. Although the Batman Who Laughs killed her initially, Wonder Woman activated her plan, transforming into the Golden Wonder Woman with incredible, god-like power. This allowed her to battle the Batman Who Laughs, who possessed abilities similar to Doctor Manhattan. Ultimately, she succeeded in defeating him and rebuilding the multiverse, demonstrating the full extent of her power in this new form.

2) Hellbat Batman

Batman is famous for building specialized equipment to fight a wide range of villains, even those as powerful as the enemies the Justice League confronts. He eventually designed the Hellbat armor – his most powerful creation yet – intending it to give him a fighting chance against virtually any foe. The armor is incredibly strong and constantly increases its power, but it’s also extremely dangerous; prolonged use is fatal. Batman has used it against Darkseid, and Lois Lane even wore it once to fight the Eradicator, demonstrating just how formidable the Hellbat armor truly is.

1) Prime Superman

The 1990s DC event, DC One Million, introduced arguably the most powerful version of Superman: Prime Superman. This Superman had spent millennia absorbing solar energy, granting him near-godlike abilities. He actually lived inside the Sun and possessed the power to alter reality itself – he even recreated his wife, Lois Lane, using her DNA. He reappeared in All-Star Superman and The Justice League vs. The Legion of Superheroes, further demonstrating his immense power and hinting at his origins. While Superman already seems incredibly powerful, there’s something uniquely compelling about the sheer scale of Prime Superman’s abilities.
