Star Wars Just Confirmed Its New Anime Release Window Ahead of Early Premiere

A new anime series is bringing Star Wars back to screens later this year, and we now know exactly when it will be released after a special preview for some fans. While the recent movie, Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, didn’t perform as well as hoped in theaters, Disney+ is hoping this new series will revitalize the Star Wars franchise.

The animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions has captivated fans with its unique takes on the Star Wars universe, showcasing the talents of various anime directors and studios. Now, the most popular story from the series, The Ninth Jedi, is being developed into a full series. It will premiere on Disney+ later this summer, with more details expected to be revealed at Anime Expo 2026 this July.

Star Wars Visions Spinoff Confirms Summer 2026 Release

I’m excited to share that Production I.G will be at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles on July 2nd! They’re giving attendees an exclusive first look at the premiere episode of Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi. We also now know the limited series will be coming to Disney+ later this summer. The screening at the expo will be in Japanese with English subtitles. Even better, Supervising Director Kenji Kamiyama, Director Shunsuke Tada, Producer Hitoshi Ito, and Lucasfilm Executive Producers Jacqui Lopez and Josh Rimes will all be there to talk about it!

Kenji Kamiyama, who directed previous Star Wars: Visions shorts, is back to direct and write Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi. This new series takes place after those earlier shorts, and while details are still coming, it will center on the Jedi and could open up new possibilities for stories within the Star Wars universe. This is particularly exciting because it’s the first full-length anime series for the franchise.

Star Wars: Visions Exec Teases New Anime Series

Lucasfilm executive producer Josh Rimes explained that after the initial short film The Ninth Jedi showed so much potential, it was natural to discuss turning it into a full series with director Kenji Kamiyama and the team at Production I.G. He said they were particularly excited about the story of Kara, her search for her father, and her mission to rebuild the Jedi Order, and how these two goals could connect or even clash.

Rimes explained that creating the first fully animated Star Wars series was a massive undertaking, and they’ve been involved from the very beginning, helping with the story, design, and production. They’re thrilled with how it’s all coming together and are excited for everyone to see it next year. In the meantime, you can watch the first three volumes of Star Wars: Visions on Disney+.
