7 Best X-Men Characters Introduced Since 2000, Ranked by Power

The X-Men have a long history, with some of the original members appearing as early as 1963. That first team included Cyclops, Iceman, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, and their leader, Professor X. A second famous lineup, the All-New X-Men, arrived in 1975, featuring Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Storm, and Thunderbird. Since then, the team has grown steadily, adding new mutants one at a time, resulting in a roster of dozens. Notably, several powerful members haven’t appeared in Marvel Comics until the year 2000 or later.

Here’s a ranking of the seven most powerful X-Men characters who first appeared in Marvel comics after the year 2000.

7) X-23

Laura Kinney first appeared in the comic book NYX #3 in 2003 as a runaway living on the streets of New York City with other young mutants. But her beginnings were unusual: she wasn’t born naturally, but created in a lab using Wolverine’s DNA. This makes her Logan’s biological daughter. Unlike many of his other children, she chose to become a hero, and the Xavier Institute helped her do so. For years she went by the name X-23, but she eventually took on the mantle of Wolverine.

It was so sad when Laura died during the Fall of X in 2024, and right now she’s stuck in the White Hot Room. But honestly, I fully expect her to come back eventually! She’s got the same amazing abilities as Wolverine – that incredible healing factor, those claws, and all the training she got with X-Force. I can’t even imagine how powerful she’ll be when she does return, it’s really exciting to think about!

6) Rockslide

It’s surprising that Rockslide ended up being a long-term member of the X-Men, considering he didn’t appear in Marvel comics until 2003 with New Mutants #3. He then joined the Young X-Men team alongside other young mutants in 2008.

Rockslide’s mutant abilities give him the power to transform into a stone golem. This transformation grants him incredible strength, allowing him to lift up to 75 tons, as well as enhanced durability and stamina. Essentially, his stone form makes him a formidable opponent in any battle.

5) Armor

Hisako Ichiki, also known as Armor, is a remarkably powerful mutant who joined the X-Men in 2004 with her debut in Astonishing X-Men #4. Her ability allows her to generate a psychic exoskeleton – essentially a suit of armor – that grants her incredible strength. This armor also protects her from harm, creating a buffer that shields her body and even prevents her from feeling impacts.

Some people wonder if her powers are limited because they rely on her psionic armor, but it’s really no different than Iron Man depending on his suit. When facing enemies, she’s incredibly powerful and can fight as well as anyone.

4) Fantomex

Fantomex is a super-powered mutant created through genetic engineering. He became an X-Man to fight alongside other mutants, first appearing in New X-Men #128 in 2002. His abilities come from a unique connection with his sidekick, E.V.A., who is essentially his mutant nervous system. Despite his many powers, Fantomex prefers using guns, and he uses specially designed bullets created by Brian Braddock.

Fantomex is remarkably intelligent thanks to his unique biology – he actually has three brains that function as one. Beyond his intellect, he’s a highly skilled and dangerous mercenary, and wears a special mask that protects him from telepathic attacks.

3) Tempus

Since 2010, Tempus has emerged as one of the most formidable mutant characters in Marvel Comics, and many believe she’s the most powerful. First appearing in All-New X-Men #1 in 2012, Tempus is a remarkably powerful mutant—almost at the highest level—with unique abilities. She can control time in ways no other mutant has before. In fact, when her powers first manifested, she unintentionally froze time in her town, requiring the X-Men to intervene and help her.

Tempus has the incredible ability to control time. Initially, she created small bubbles that could completely stop time – she even used these to defeat the entire Avengers team on her own! As she developed her powers, she learned to speed up and slow down time within these bubbles, and eventually, even travel through time. In a remarkable feat, she once went back in time to prevent the birth of Mathew Malloy, considered the most powerful mutant ever, by ensuring his parents never met.

2) Kid Omega

Kid Omega first appeared in New X-Men #134. As a student at the Xavier Institute, he was often arrogant, believing he was superior to both his peers and teachers. He even formed a group of students who modeled themselves after Trask and openly clashed with other mutants. But as time went on, he grew more mature and learned to control his abilities with the help of Jean Grey.

During training, Kid Omega’s psychic abilities proved to be as strong as Jean Grey’s, despite her greater experience and control. Both are incredibly powerful Omega-level mutants, but their powers manifest differently, and Quentin still works on mastering his mental abilities. He can read, influence, and manipulate minds on a huge scale, and recently, during the Age of Revelation, he demonstrated the ability to simultaneously disable multiple psychics – a remarkably powerful accomplishment.

1) Hope Summers

Despite her significance in Marvel Comics, it’s surprising that Hope Summers wasn’t introduced until issue #205 of X-Men in 2007. Though she’s currently deceased due to the Fall of X storyline, Hope was once one of the most powerful mutants. She first appeared as the first mutant baby born after Scarlet Witch depowered mutants, and the Messiah Complex plotline hinted she would eventually trigger a mutant apocalypse.

Hope Summers is a significant figure in mutant history. The main version of Hope, from Earth-616, was able to avoid a tragic fate experienced by her counterpart from Earth-1191 due to time travel. She possessed incredible powers, capable of perfectly copying the abilities of nearby mutants, making her an exceptionally powerful Omega-level mutant. Adding to her strength, she also shared a connection to the Phoenix Force. Following the events of the Fall of X, Hope passed away and entered the White Hot Room, but it’s certain she will eventually return.
