The recent passing of Nicholas Brendon has prompted many fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to revisit their favorite episodes featuring his character, Xander Harris. Brendon famously played Xander, the relatable and often humorous member of the Scooby Gang, and a steadfast friend to Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar). Along with Alysson Hannigan’s Willow Rosenberg, he was one of the original cast members who remained with the show throughout its seven seasons, and fans will fondly remember his work, particularly his portrayal of Xander.
Although Buffy the Vampire Slayer primarily followed Buffy Summers, here are seven of the best episodes that focused on the character Xander Harris.
7) “Halloween”

Given that Buffy the Vampire Slayer featured vampires, demons, and other monsters, it’s surprising the show only had three Halloween episodes over its seven seasons. The standout episode of those three allowed Xander Harris to really shine as a hero. The story revolved around Ethan Rayne, a warlock and recurring enemy of Giles, who opened a costume shop. Anyone who bought and wore a costume from the shop would transform into the character it represented.
Okay, let’s talk about this episode. It wasn’t a high point for Buffy, honestly. She was stuck in this ridiculous 18th-century getup and, predictably, needed rescuing. But the real surprise? Xander! He actually got to be the hero, decked out in a soldier costume, and it was a welcome change of pace. What I really loved, though, is how the writers cleverly brought up his ‘army training’ in later episodes – a running gag, considering it all stemmed from this one silly spell! It was a fun twist and made seeing Xander charge into action genuinely enjoyable.
6) “Hell’s Bells”

The episode “Hell’s Bells” focuses on Xander and his planned wedding to Anya. He unexpectedly leaves her at the altar, haunted by a vision of himself becoming like his abusive father. This episode is a particularly poignant one for Xander, delving into his inner struggles and focusing more on his personal trauma than the supernatural threats usually seen in the show.
This experience forced Xander to confront his deepest feelings. Even after discovering the visions were a demonic deception, he realized he wasn’t prepared for marriage and lacked the self-trust needed to commit to Anya. He displays his fears and vulnerabilities more clearly in this episode than almost any other, making for a compelling portrayal, despite many fans still disapproving of him leaving her at the altar.
5) “The Pack”

In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “The Pack,” Xander Harris had the opportunity to play the bad guy, which highlighted why some fans disliked his character. The episode featured Xander being possessed by hyenas, causing him to act terribly while under their control. As an early episode in Season 1, it was a surprising glimpse into a darker side of Xander and what he could have become.
This episode showcased Xander at his worst, highlighting the roots of his problematic behavior later in the series. Though he wasn’t acting rationally, his actions foreshadowed his future toxicity. The ending was particularly impactful, as only Giles realized Xander remembered everything, deepening his existing trauma and feelings of inadequacy.
4) “The Wish”

As a longtime Buffy watcher, I always point people to Season 3’s “The Wish” when they ask where to start. It’s a brilliant episode, and honestly, just a blast to watch. The premise is simple: Cordelia, reeling from her split with Xander, makes a wish – that Buffy never came to Sunnydale. A new demon, Anya, actually grants it, and things quickly go south in a really fascinating and scary way. It’s a standout for the Xander and Willow fans, but honestly, anyone can appreciate how cleverly this one unfolds.
Because Buffy didn’t make it to Sunnydale, the vampires succeeded and took over. Willow and Xander both became vampires and served The Master, and it was surprisingly enjoyable to see them fully embrace villainy. Although Willow briefly returned as a vampire later on, this was the only time we ever saw Xander as a vampire, and the two of them working together was a delightful surprise.
3) “The Replacement”

The episode “The Replacement” aimed to help Xander deal with his past trauma and difficult upbringing. Interestingly, Nicholas Brendon’s twin brother, Kelly Donovan, played an evil version of Xander in the episode. As this ‘evil Xander’ starts to take over, Xander’s friends begin to worry that he’s changed permanently.
This episode echoed themes from “The Pack,” but instead of Xander being corrupted by an outside force, he was secretly replaced by someone else. This created the same tension of his friends questioning who the real Xander was. The episode also uniquely showed the difficult and often chaotic environment of Xander’s home life, with his parents publicly arguing and struggling with alcohol. Ultimately, Xander decided to move out and try to build a new life for himself, marking a significant and memorable turning point in his character arc within Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
2) “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered”

Two episodes particularly highlighted Xander, and they stood out for different reasons. One was arguably the best episode focused solely on his character, while the other was the best overall Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode where Xander took the lead. “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” a Season 2 episode, falls into the latter category. While not showcasing Xander at his absolute best, the episode was memorable for a spell that caused all the women in Sunnydale to become attracted to him – except for Cordelia.
Okay, let me tell you about this Buffy episode. It all starts with Xander getting dumped by Cordelia, and honestly, it’s a classic case of him trying to fix things with magic – specifically, he convinces Amy to cast a love spell. The plan? To win Cordelia back. But, predictably, it goes horribly wrong. Instead of Cordelia falling for him, everyone – even Buggy and Willow! – suddenly develops intense feelings for Xander, ranging from wanting to protect him to, in Drusilla’s case, wanting to… well, let’s just say she gets a little too attached. Cordelia, however, remains completely unaffected. Honestly, it’s a hilarious episode, watching all the women vying for – or against – Xander’s attention. As far as episodes focusing on Xander go, and considering its impact on the larger Buffy story, this one is a real standout. It’s easily one of his best.
1) “The Zeppo”

Though “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” showcased Xander as the central figure in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “The Zeppo” is widely considered his strongest character-driven episode and a defining moment for his arc. In this Season 3 installment, Xander feels excluded from Buffy and the gang, leading him to spend time with a classmate named Jack O’Toole. The situation quickly escalates when Jack resurrects some friends, and they plot to destroy the school.
This episode gets its name from Zeppo Marx, the least famous of the Marx Brothers, and Cordelia points out to Xander that he’s the “Zeppo” of the Scooby Gang. A lot happens – Jack turns against Xander, and Faith both seduces and then embarrasses him. The episode really focuses on undermining Xander’s confidence, showing him connecting with women and even experiencing a violation. What makes this episode the strongest one centered around Xander in Buffy the Vampire Slayer is that, despite everything, he’s still the one who bravely jumps into the fight, even though he’s the least powerful member of the group, to save his friends.
