Under the expansive Disney brand, the Star Wars universe is expanding at an impressive rate. Characters who previously wouldn’t have had standalone projects are now getting their moment in the spotlight, such as Cassian Andor. In the pipeline, we have several intriguing films, including Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s “New Jedi Order” movie. The former is set after “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” while the latter will reintroduce Rey Skywalker to a distant galaxy. It would be exciting to watch a new breed of Jedi on the silver screen if these films ever reach theaters, but extending the Skywalker Saga shouldn’t necessarily mean bringing back old characters.
From a film aficionado’s perspective, I’ve learned that revisiting familiar ground isn’t always a wise move. The risks are high, and tarnishing a beloved character’s legacy for a dose of nostalgia just doesn’t seem fair. Some characters are best left in the annals of time, where their stories can mature gracefully, much like a fine wine.
1) Emperor Palpatine
Among all Star Wars characters, none is more deserving of a peaceful retirement than Emperor Palpatine. Throughout the first two saga trilogies, he skillfully manipulated both the Republic and Empire to achieve absolute power and rejuvenate the Sith Order. Remarkably, after apparently perishing on the second Death Star, he resurfaced in “The Rise of Skywalker” to continue his machinations. He has constructed enough starfleets and battled numerous Jedi for a lifetime’s worth of conflict.
2) Luke Skywalker
It’s tough to envision Star Wars without Luke Skywalker, as he was the humble farm boy who ultimately became a hero strong enough to defeat the Empire. Unfortunately, after his tragic failure with Ben Solo, Luke goes into self-imposed exile. However, he redeems himself by saving the Resistance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and offering Rey guidance as a Force spirit in The Rise of Skywalker. Despite this, his journey has come to an end. Star Wars gave him a fitting farewell by showcasing him in his prime across Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett.
3) Han Solo
It appears that Han Solo just doesn’t feel like a fully realized character without Harrison Ford. In the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story, while it was enjoyable, it didn’t quite manage to make Alden Ehrenreich’s portrayal of the character compelling enough for a return in a future TV show or film. Instead, I believe that the creators should allow Han Solo’s legacy to end on a high note, with him helping his son, Ben, abandon the dark side and fulfill his destiny as a hero who saves the galaxy by defeating Palpatine.
4) Ben Solo
Kylo Ren stands among Star Wars’ most formidable antagonists, demonstrating this by slaying his father and mentor to solidify his commitment to the dark side. His ultimate goal is to annihilate the Resistance for good. In “The Rise of Skywalker,” Ben undergoes a redemption arc, which is one of the film’s more notable aspects. However, it seems unnecessary for Star Wars to risk overstepping its bounds in this regard, as Ben departs from the storyline according to plan.
5) Mace Windu
There’s been a strong desire among fans to bring back the character Mace Windu, with director Bryce Dallas Howard advocating for his return. However, it’s important to remember that Mace represents the Jedi’s arrogance in the prequels, as the Order ultimately falls due to overconfident individuals like him. Reintroducing him might seem appealing, but it could be seen as rewarding a character who may not deserve such a comeback.
6) Captain Phasma
In the subsequent trilogy, a tactic similar to the original was employed by introducing a charming antagonist who never removes their helmet. Regrettably, Captain Phasma didn’t live up to Boba Fett’s reputation, often losing battles and lacking significance. Instead of resurrecting her for potential redemption, it would be more engaging to give another character the chance to demonstrate why they deserve a role in a distant galaxy.
7) Yoda
The Acolyte Season 1. If the show hadn’t been canceled, it’s likely that Yoda would have played a significant role in Season 2. However, it might be time to move on from the little green character. Although he appears in most major films and several cartoons, providing wise guidance to his students, there are many other Jedi who can take over his roles.
