As a comic book movie fan, I remember a time when the Avengers weren’t the juggernaut they are today. They really stumbled in the ’90s, losing some of their shine. It took until the mid-2000s for them to start regaining momentum. The New Avengers comic in 2005 was a good start, but honestly, it was that little movie Iron Man in 2008 that really kicked things into high gear. Since then, the Avengers have been consistently popular – though things have cooled off a bit recently – and they’ve become a true cultural phenomenon, a team that a whole generation now knows and loves.
Comics often rely on fond memories, and the Avengers have a rich history full of great stories. While it’s good to introduce new ideas and create fresh legends, revisiting the past can be really exciting too. Here are seven classic Avengers storylines that would be fantastic to explore again, and could help solidify the team’s place as the most iconic in superhero fiction.
7) The Destiny Force
The Kree-Skrull War is considered a classic Avengers storyline, and it originally introduced a fascinating concept called the Destiny Force. This force suggests humanity is destined to evolve into a powerful, god-like race. Rick Jones, a long-time Marvel supporting character, was the first to tap into this potential, but no one has really used it since. The Destiny Force hasn’t appeared in Avengers comics for over two decades – since 1999’s Avengers Forever – and it’s time for a revival.
6) Alkhema
Ultron is a major Avengers villain with a significant history, but his wife, Alkhema, hasn’t had the same impact. Created by Ultron as a companion in both life and his goal to destroy humanity, their relationship is marked by frequent alliances and betrayals. Alkhema appears occasionally, and has the potential to be a much more compelling character – either as an ally against Ultron, or as a villain with her own motivations. Currently, she lacks a clear purpose when she appears, though her connection to the Pym family – a group known for its complex characters – suggests interesting possibilities if developed further.
5) The Avengers Machine
The Avengers Machine was a concept first introduced in Jonathan Hickman’s influential run on The Avengers. Iron Man and Captain America realized the threats facing Earth were becoming too big for the standard Avengers team to handle. While powerful, the heroes weren’t prepared for everything the world – and beyond – was throwing at them. The Avengers Machine aimed to solve this by assembling an unprecedentedly large and powerful team of heroes, capable of dividing into smaller groups that could even defeat god-like beings. It was a groundbreaking idea for the Avengers, and perhaps it’s time to revisit it – bringing together another massive roster to face the dangers of the multiverse, and simply enjoy working together again, something fans have been wanting for a while.
4) Hyperion of Earth-13031
Jonathan Hickman’s run on the Avengers introduced some fantastic characters who haven’t appeared since, and the best of them is Hyperion from Earth-13031. This version, a take on the classic Superman archetype, lost his home world during the Incursions and was rescued by AIM, eventually joining the Avengers. He was a really compelling character with a hinted-at heroic past, and he formed a strong friendship with Thor. Together, they fought the Beyonders during the “Times Runs Out” storyline, after which Hyperion disappeared. It’s definitely time to bring him back – he’s the most interesting Hyperion, and a natural fit for the Avengers.
3) Dark Reign
The “Dark Reign” storyline was a really exciting period for Marvel readers. For roughly a year and a half, the Marvel Universe was controlled by Norman Osborn, formerly the Green Goblin. He rebranded himself as Iron Patriot, using a modified Iron Man suit, and built a team of Dark Avengers. He also established HAMMER, an organization similar to SHIELD, and operated with a secret group of villains called the Cabal. Many fans would love to see a new Dark Reign storyline, one that builds on the original concept in fresh ways. The Avengers could really benefit from a shake-up, and a new Dark Reign might be exactly what they need.
2) The Celestial Madonna
The concept of the Celestial Madonna is a classic, somewhat quirky idea from Marvel’s 1970s comics. Despite being a key plot point for years – involving the alien Mantis being destined to bear the next Celestial Messiah – it’s largely been forgotten. I’ve been reading Avengers for decades and it’s always just been a background element. Now that Mantis is a popular character, it feels like a good time to revisit and expand on this story.
1) Wonder Man and Beast’s Friendship
Wonder Man and Beast are arguably the best pairing in Avengers history. While fans love classic duos like Captain America and Iron Man, or Hawkeye and Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch seems to get along with anyone, Wonder Man and Beast truly stand out. They’re great friends and a fun combination, but haven’t been featured much recently. Considering Beast is currently depicted as his past self from the X-Men comics, it’s the perfect time to reunite them as a central part of the team. Both characters are popular right now, and bringing them back together would be a fantastic storyline. They have amazing chemistry and deserve the spotlight.
