Horror has always been a natural fit for DC Comics. Known for a grittier tone, DC frequently explores darker themes, and this became especially true in the 1980s. This period saw their comics become increasingly scary, ultimately leading to the creation of their Vertigo imprint. Titles like *Batman & Robin* and *Batman: Dark Patterns* exemplify how the imprint successfully incorporated supernatural and even gruesome body horror into the Batman mythos. Given the success of these books, it begs the question: which other DC characters would thrive in a horror setting?
Horror elements can be a fun addition to DC comics, but they don’t always work for every character. While I enjoy both horror and Superman, I don’t think the two fit together naturally. Superman feels more at home in science fiction than in scary, mystical stories. It’s a bit of an odd pairing, and many fans likely agree that now isn’t the right time for a darker take on the character.
7) Wonder Woman
While we’ve seen hints of it in *Absolute Wonder Woman*, Wonder Woman would really shine in a horror comic. She briefly led Justice League Dark, but a solo series focusing on horror would be fantastic. Imagine her delving into dark myths and battling Lovecraftian monsters – it would be a guaranteed success.
To really develop her character, let her face some of those dangers on her own in *JLD*, or introduce concepts like The Green, The Red, and The Rot. We haven’t explored this side of her much, and it could significantly enrich her story and how she handles her challenges.
6) Robin (Tim Drake)
Tim Drake often feels overshadowed compared to the other Robins. While Nightwing has a troubled past, it doesn’t venture into horror, and Red Hood is constantly battling crime and his own demons. Damian Wayne is currently preoccupied with supernatural threats. Tim, however, doesn’t have a strong, defining storyline right now, though that may change with the new Batman series. Given his exceptional detective skills, having Tim investigate unsolved mysteries in Gotham would give him the unique focus he needs.
Cold cases aren’t necessarily about the supernatural, but they can uncover disturbing crimes and conspiracies, especially in a city with a spooky reputation. There’s plenty of inspiration to draw from – Tim could investigate cases similar to those seen in films like *Longlegs, Weapons, Se7en,* and *Zodiac*, and the story possibilities are vast. The only major addition needed might be a standalone story focusing on Tim as Robin.
5) Supergirl
While horror doesn’t quite fit with Superman’s character, Supergirl is well-suited for it. She’s tough and determined, but also optimistic, which creates a compelling mix for darker storylines, like the one in Woman of Tomorrow. That story really showcases her strength and resilience. I especially enjoyed Sophie Campbell’s Supergirl series, and I think sending Kara into space to encounter terrifying, cosmic beings would be a great direction for the character.
One idea would be to draw inspiration from Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s *Green Lantern: War Journal* and pit Supergirl against cosmic undead creatures. She’s uniquely suited to fight space zombies or similar threats. Exploring space and uncovering strange, dark mysteries is also something DC currently lacks for her character.
4) Doom Patrol
I’ve been really enjoying charting Kara’s adventures in space, focusing on the unsettling, strange things she discovers out there. But when I think about what’s happening back on Earth, I keep picturing the Doom Patrol. It feels like recent writers have been subtly adding more and more genuinely creepy stuff – things like the different personalities within Crazy Jane, or the Candlemaker. It’s never quite been *straight* horror, but the book always has this incredibly unsettling atmosphere, and honestly, I think they should really embrace that fully and go all-in on the horror side of things.
The Doom Patrol should battle creatures from other dimensions and lingering dangers from the Dark Multiverse. They’re uniquely prepared – and perhaps the only ones willing – to handle these kinds of threats.
3) Batwoman
Batwoman’s comics have often explored darker themes within the DC universe, and leaning fully into horror could be a fantastic way to revitalize the character. She’s already faced situations bordering on horror, so it would be a natural fit. Imagine her battling classic monstrous Batman villains like Man-Bat and Killer Croc – her unique, grounded fighting style would make those encounters especially compelling. Plus, Batwoman’s costume and overall aesthetic already give her a more animalistic feel compared to Batman.
Considering everything Kate Kane has overcome, especially facing opponents like Clayface, she’s incredibly resilient and not easily frightened. Her strength and composure are exactly what a horror story needs – someone who doesn’t break under pressure.
2) Booster Gold
Booster Gold is definitely the most unusual character on this list, but a horror series could actually work really well for him. He’s stumbled into scary situations a lot already, like in the Absolute universe and the *Batman: The Gift* storyline. He’d be a surprisingly effective “final girl” – watching this somewhat clueless hero struggle to maintain his composure while facing terrifying, world-ending threats would be incredibly compelling.
The future of the Absolute universe likely holds many troubled beings, particularly with Darkseid’s Legion involved. Making Booster Gold a hesitant hero would be a great way to tell this story. However, when he eventually returns, he really needs some time to recover – he’s already endured so much.
1) Zatanna
Okay, let’s talk Zatanna. As a huge fan, I always felt she’s *perfect* for a horror-focused story. She’s constantly battling magical dangers, so it just makes sense! Her recent series hinted at that darker side, but honestly, it didn’t go far enough. Imagine a truly terrifying dive into the underworld with Zatanna, constantly facing demonic threats – that’s the kind of creepy, adventurous story I’d love to see!
She thrives on managing the lost belongings and spirits of the deceased. While she’s skilled at restoring order, the story needs a touch more horror to create the right atmosphere.
