As a longtime fan, I’ve always felt DC Comics really established the core idea of what a superhero should be. For years, what made DC heroes special was their inherent goodness – they felt different, and honestly, better than the heroes from other companies. They were pretty straightforward for a long time, and it wasn’t until later that creators started exploring more complicated sides to them. We started seeing darker takes on these characters, and it actually worked really well for some of them! Now, it feels like every DC hero has either been a villain at some point, or there’s an evil version of them from another universe popping up. It’s become a common thing, and honestly, some of these characters just seem better as bad guys, even the ones you’d never expect.
When a hero unexpectedly becomes a villain, it can be incredibly compelling. Sometimes characters need a fresh direction – they’ve explored everything they can as heroes and switching sides offers exciting new possibilities. Here are seven DC heroes who would be fascinating as villains, crossing over to the darker side.
7) Ice

Ice formed an unlikely friendship with Fire when they both joined the Justice League International. She quickly became known as the team’s kind and optimistic member, always seeing the best in others. While she’s largely remained consistent throughout her history, a 2021 storyline in Human Target offered a glimpse of a more strategic and cunning side to Ice. This more assertive and mysterious portrayal was a fun departure, and exploring that side of her again could be a refreshing change. It would allow for a drastically different take on the character and potentially reveal exciting new facets of her personality.
6) Hourman III

Hourman III is a highly advanced being from the future – essentially a swarm of tiny robots. Built by the Tyler family’s descendants, he’s a time-traveler who joined the Justice Legion A. While popular with fans, the character hasn’t always been particularly compelling. Turning him into a villain could fix that. Imagine a being guided by cold, calculating logic, having witnessed all of humanity’s darkest moments. He might conclude that humans are too destructive and the only way to protect the timeline is to eliminate them. This would make him a fantastic and dangerous villain, capable of challenging both the Justice League and Justice Society with his time-traveling abilities.
5) Dr. Occult

The DC Multiverse is full of powerful magic users, meaning anyone who can last long in that universe is incredibly strong. Dr. Occult has been fighting supernatural threats since the 1940s, known as the Golden Age of comics. Now, sharing a body with his partner Rose Psychic, he uses a powerful artifact called the Mystical Symbol of the Seven to protect people from truly frightening villains. Dr. Occult hasn’t been prominently featured in DC stories for years—his last speaking role was in the opening arc of Justice League Unlimited—and turning him into a villain could be a great way to revitalize the character. Exploring a dynamic where he’s evil and Rose is good, or the other way around, would be a compelling twist.
4) Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn has become a major character in the DC universe, rising from a simple beginning. She’s gone through several transformations – starting as a villain, then shifting into a morally grey character, an anti-hero, and ultimately a hero. While she’s been successful as a good guy, her recent stories have become a bit bland and lack the edge that initially made her so popular. Harley could benefit from a fresh start, and returning to her villainous roots might be just what she needs.
3) Aquaman

Aquaman is known as the guardian of the oceans and a reliable member of the Justice League. But exploring a darker side to his character could be really interesting. We saw a glimpse of this in the Flashpoint storyline, and it was a compelling change. Consider Namor from Marvel – he proves that underwater kings can make fantastic villains. Atlantis, Aquaman’s kingdom, is incredibly powerful and magical, giving him access to devastating weapons and the ability to challenge even the strongest heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. As the ruler of such a vast kingdom, he has the potential to cause significant global conflict.
2) Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter is a well-known and beloved hero, consistently appearing as a key member of the Justice League throughout its history. While DC fans generally adore him, a storyline in the New 52 era reimagined him as a darker, more menacing figure – and it worked surprisingly well. Exploring this more villainous side of J’onn J’onnz could be a fantastic direction for the character. Because he’s typically seen as a purely good hero, a turn to the dark side would be genuinely shocking. Given his incredible power, he’d be a formidable opponent even for his former teammates, making him a compelling villain within the DC Multiverse.
1) Batman

It wasn’t surprising to see Batman ranked so high. Given his already morally gray approach to fighting crime, a full descent into villainy doesn’t feel far-fetched. We’ve seen evil versions of Batman before – through possession, altered origins, or a turn to endless killing – and it might be time for the main Batman to go down that path. He’d be a formidable villain, easily rivaling Lex Luthor. Batman possesses the intelligence and wealth, but crucially, he also understands the heroes’ weaknesses and how to defeat them. He’d be the most dangerous enemy the DC Universe heroes have ever encountered.
