DC Comics played a huge role in shaping the modern idea of superheroes as beacons of hope and strong moral figures. Many of the common themes we see in superhero stories today – like a reluctance to kill – originated with DC. While most heroes avoid taking lives, believing it’s wrong and sets a dangerous example, some DC heroes have crossed that line. These killings happen for various reasons, ranging from desperate circumstances to the hero becoming corrupted and turning evil. In some cases, these heroes have killed as many, or even more, people than the villains they fight.
It seems shocking, but DC Comics has featured superheroes committing genocide on multiple occasions. These events often involved the senseless killing of innocent people by heroes who became corrupted and abused their powers. This includes instances where deaths were later reversed or explained away. Given these dangers, it’s understandable why Batman would prepare plans to neutralize the entire superhero population if necessary.
7) Hawkman

Look, I’ve been a Hawkman fan for years, but it’s hard to ignore his history. He’s lived a long time, and he’s a warrior through and through, which means he’s definitely racked up a lot of kills. Whether he was fighting as a soldier on Thanagar or in one of his past lives, he’s always been brutal in battle – his mace has seen a lot of action. Honestly, even his teammates in the Justice League have to watch him closely, because he has a tendency to go too far. There was that one time he caused an avalanche to stop an army of sea creatures, and it was…intense. Over all his lives, it adds up to thousands of people who’ve fallen in battle against him. It’s a complicated part of his story, but it’s definitely there.
6) Green Lantern

Hal Jordan’s tragic turn into a villain is one of the most well-known examples of a hero becoming a mass murderer in comic books. After the destruction of his hometown, Coast City, he was manipulated by Parallax, the embodiment of fear. This corruption transformed him into a powerful, galactic villain, and he began killing thousands of Green Lanterns to steal their power. Ultimately, Hal was responsible for the deaths of nearly all the Green Lanterns in the universe. While the Green Lanterns were eventually brought back to life and Hal was later redeemed, many never forgot his horrific actions.
5) Spectre

The Spectre is a force of divine punishment, delivering consequences to sinners on a massive scale. He possesses limitless power to alter reality, and his punishments are often ironic, cruel, and result in death or a fate worse than death. Throughout history, the Spectre has been responsible for devastating events, including the destruction of Sodom and the plagues of Egypt. His acts of destruction aren’t limited to the Bible; he once completely destroyed the country of Vlatava, killing millions because he believed their fate was already sealed by war and famine. Even for a being dedicated to vengeance, this act was exceptionally ruthless.
4) Doctor Fate

Doctor Fate, a powerful sorcerer dating back to the Golden Age of comics, has a history of immense power and, tragically, causing many deaths. Once, after saving Earth from a series of exploding nebulae, he discovered they were created by an alien race known as the Globe Men. To prevent further attacks, Doctor Fate used his magic to destroy the Globe Men’s entire planet, wiping out billions of beings without hesitation. Fortunately, over the years, DC Comics has toned down Doctor Fate’s willingness to commit such extreme acts.
3) Captain Atom

Captain Atom is an incredibly powerful and sometimes unforgiving member of the Justice League, and his abilities make him a formidable force. He once suffered severe injuries that drove him insane, transforming him into the villainous Monarch. As Monarch, he committed horrific acts, including the mass murder of everyone in the city of Bludhaven, and then planned to conquer multiple universes. To amass an army, he abducted heroes from various realities and forced them to fight to the death, recruiting the survivors. Monarch’s destructive path was finally stopped in a devastating conflict with the Monitors and Superboy-Prime, which resulted in the complete destruction of Earth-51 and all its inhabitants. Although Captain Atom has recovered his sanity, his actions as Monarch caused immense loss of life.
2) Doctor Manhattan

Becoming like a god and losing touch with humanity is a risky thing. In the Doomsday Clock storyline, Doctor Manhattan, after leaving his original universe, went to the main DC Universe simply to see what would happen if he changed things. He started by killing Pandora, then arranged for the death of Alan Scott, effectively wiping out the Justice Society. He even caused the death of Superman’s parents in a car accident and erased the entire history of the Legion of Superheroes, meaning billions never existed. These actions almost destroyed the DC Universe, but Superman was able to talk Doctor Manhattan into reversing everything and bringing everyone back.
1) Superboy-Prime

Superboy-Prime was once considered the biggest danger to the entire DC Multiverse. While he’s since worked to become a hero again, even taking on the role of Superman and protecting Metropolis, his past actions are horrific. He’s responsible for the deaths of countless beings, including Superboy and another Superman from a different universe. He once went on a destructive rampage, wiping out entire universes and killing trillions. Adding to that, he also killed hundreds of Green Lanterns. Despite trying to be a true hero now, Superboy-Prime continues to battle his violent tendencies and the weight of his past.
