The DC Universe (DCU) is shaping up to be something truly impressive. Shows like Superman, Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker have already gained dedicated fans, and there’s a lot of excitement for the upcoming Supergirl series. So far, DC has done a great job of bringing its comic book characters and stories to life on screen. DC is known for its more fantastical and powerful characters, and its infinite multiverse. The DCU has already started to address the challenge of balancing these immense powers, presenting a slightly less powerful version of Superman. This suggests a trend of adjusting the power levels of other characters, moving the DCU in a similar direction to the postCrisis* era, when DC significantly reduced the power levels of many characters to make them more relatable.
Because the new DC Universe is aiming for a less powerful scale overall, some existing villains are simply too strong to fit in. While they could be weakened, that would diminish what made them formidable in the first place. These seven DC villains possess abilities and skills that would overwhelm the DCU’s heroes, making their inclusion impractical.
7) The Empty Hand

Grant Morrison’s The Multiversity is a celebrated story that explores the vast new multiverse introduced with the New 52 DC Comics reboot. Though the idea of a multiverse was hinted at years earlier in Final Crisis, The Multiversity fully realized it. The story centers on an attack by the Gentry, mysterious beings who threaten countless universes, and culminates in the introduction of their leader, the Empty Hand. Though never directly seen, the Empty Hand is clearly an incredibly powerful being – commanding the Gentry and traveling between universes suggests a threat capable of destroying entire realities. In fact, his power extends beyond the DC Universe, dwarfing even the scale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
6) The Batman Who Laughs

The Batman Who Laughs became popular very quickly, and while some blame DC for overusing him, people initially loved the character. Regardless, he’s incredibly powerful – a twisted version of Batman who managed to destroy all life on his world. Despite being a normal human (aside from later transferring his mind into the body of Dr. Bathattan), he’s still Batman, meaning he’s a formidable opponent capable of defeating anyone. He’s simply too powerful to realistically appear in films, even without any inherent superpowers.
5) Rogol Zaar

Rogol Zaar appeared when Brian Michael Bendis started writing Superman for DC Comics, serving as the primary villain in the first part of his story. Zaar had a deep hatred for Kryptonians and was tasked with destroying their home planet. When he discovered Superman, Supergirl, and the survivors of Kandor, he relentlessly pursued them, proving to be incredibly powerful – even defeating Superman, Supergirl, and Zod. They could only overcome him by combining their strength, along with Jon Kent. Considering how prominent Kryptonians are in the current DC Universe, introducing a character who outpowers them so significantly would be a risky move.
4) Nekron

The comic book event Blackest Night was a fantastic conclusion to storylines that had been building in the Green Lantern comics for years. It featured the Black Lantern Corps, a frightening force of resurrected villains led by Nekron, a being who embodies death itself in the DC Universe. Nekron is incredibly powerful and represents the inevitability of death. While he can be temporarily defeated by the power of life, he’s never truly gone, because death is unavoidable. He makes for a compelling villain, but his power level is arguably too high for the DC Universe.
3) Extant

Extant served as the primary villain in the 1990s comic storyline Zero Hour: A Crisis in Time, created to resolve lingering issues from the Crisis on Infinite Earths event. His powers revolved around manipulating time, and he also possessed incredible energy control and physical strength. The story revealed Extant was actually an evil, future version of Captain Atom, also known as the Monarch, inheriting all of that hero’s abilities to control energy and matter. Essentially, he could control his surroundings completely, instantly age people, and even summon alternate versions of heroes and villains to do his bidding. This level of power proved to be far too great for the DC Universe.
2) Anti-Monitor

While many DC characters are responsible for a lot of deaths, the Anti-Monitor stands alone, having destroyed entire universes. As the son of Perpetua, he was originally tasked with managing anti-matter across the DC Multiverse. Eventually, he decided he wanted to rule a multiverse made of anti-matter. This led him to unleash devastating waves of anti-matter at universes filled with normal matter, forcing heroes from five different Earths to fight him. He can obliterate universes with ease – think of it as casually eating snacks – and effortlessly defeat even the most powerful Kryptonians from before the Crisis event (those capable of moving planets or destroying solar systems with a sneeze). He’s far more powerful than any villain seen in a superhero movie, making even Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet seem relatively weak.
1) Perpetua

Perpetua is arguably the most powerful villain ever created for DC Comics, and that’s a significant claim. She’s part of a race called the Hands, beings with the ability to create entire multiverses. In fact, Perpetua created the DC Multiverse. When she decided she wanted to use it to dominate other universes, her children and the Hands worked together to trap her beyond a barrier called the Source Wall. She’s responsible for the incredible powers held by the heroes and people of the DC Multiverse. While the Anti-Monitor is immensely powerful compared to typical comic book villains, Perpetua is on a completely different scale – her power surpasses everything else.
