The latest Spider-Man story focuses heavily on the symbiotes, with Carnage playing a major role. Marvel has been fascinated with these creatures ever since introducing Venom in the late 1980s, and they’ve continued to expand the symbiote universe. While Venom has evolved into more of a hero, particularly with Mary Jane Watson as a host, other symbiote hosts remain incredibly dangerous villains, like Cletus Kasady as Carnage, and many more besides.
Here is a look at the seven deadliest symbiote hosts in Marvel Comics.
7) Eddie Brock

Eddie Brock is generally a hero, but his history with the symbiote includes a willingness to kill. Initially, he aimed to defeat Spider-Man, all while trying to protect vulnerable people. Throughout the comics, though, he’s crossed the line and become dangerously violent on more than one occasion.
Recently, Eddie Bond took on the Carnage symbiote, believing he could master its power. He and Carnage made a dangerous agreement: Eddie would kill criminals, allowing Carnage to continue its rampage without harming innocent people. Predictably, Carnage broke the deal, but the situation revealed Eddie’s own capacity for extreme violence when pushed to the limit.
6) Torment

Torment is a recently introduced Spider-Man villain quickly gaining notoriety, largely due to his shocking murder of Paul Rabin, a character many Spider-Man fans disliked. However, Torment isn’t just a killer of his primary targets – he eliminates everyone connected to them. This has led to a significant body count, including numerous relatives of Eddie Brock (Venom) and even the villain Shocker, who Torment claimed had ties to Mary Jane Watson.
After escaping Eddie Brock, Carnage bonded with Torment, even though the serial killer didn’t seem to want him. This pairing creates one of the most dangerous killers ever to host a symbiote, and if the connection lasts, Torment could become even more of a threat.
5) Jonathan Shayde

Jonathan Shayde was one of the people to become a host for the Carnage symbiote. A dedicated NYPD detective, he prioritized his work above all else, straining his relationships with loved ones. After a frustrating encounter with Wilson Fisk exposed the flaws in the justice system, Shayde clashed with Carnage and nearly lost his life. This caught Carnage’s attention, and the symbiote intentionally bonded a small part of itself to Shayde, curious to see just how far this determined man would go.
Jon discovered that Carnage was eliminating other villains to gain their powers, and he tried to intervene. But he quickly realized he couldn’t truly stop the criminals, and the legal system wasn’t working. Overwhelmed, he succumbed to his own dark impulses and became a monster. This was a powerful story demonstrating Carnage’s ability to corrupt even someone with good intentions.
4) Donna Diego

Donna Diego is the host of the Scream symbiote, and she was the most formidable and dangerous of all the Life Foundation symbiotes. She established her dominance by eliminating the other symbiotes, proving she was the strongest and most aggressive. This made her a particularly dangerous opponent for Venom.
Before becoming the villain Scream, Donna had a history of mental health problems and experienced psychotic episodes, which made her vulnerable to becoming a host for the symbiote. She was cunning and dangerous, later committing multiple murders and attempting to frame Eddie Brock for them. Ultimately, Eddie killed her, bringing an end to her destructive actions.
3) Malekith

Surprisingly, Malekith, the Dark Elf known for starting the War of the Realms, was once the most dangerous being ever connected to a symbiote. He bonded with the Venom symbiote during that conflict, using dark magic to control it and become incredibly powerful.
This drove Malekith to a desperate act: wielding the All-Black the Necrosword, a powerful weapon previously used by Knull and Gorr the God Butcher. The sword amplified his own abilities and those of his followers, and he used it to kill many before Thor managed to break the connection with the symbiote using Mjolnir. This event ultimately drew the attention of Jon Shayde, who, as Carnage, began to pursue Malekith after he escaped from Hel.
2) Mac Gargan

Before becoming Venom, Mac Gargan was known as the Scorpion, and he proved to be the most dangerous person to ever connect with the Venom symbiote. Unlike many Spider-Man enemies who commit petty crimes, Scorpion was a ruthless killer who initially gained his powers with the sole purpose of defeating Spider-Man. After separating from Eddie Brock, the Venom symbiote searched for a new host and ultimately bonded with Mac Gargan, as they both shared a common goal: to destroy Spider-Man.
While connected to Mac, Venom was responsible for more deaths than with most other hosts. This became even riskier when they joined Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers and received government authorization due to Osborn’s newfound power. It wasn’t until the massive conflict known as Siege, and Osborn’s subsequent downfall, that Scorpion (Gargan) was finally defeated and separated from the symbiote. The symbiote was then given to Flash Thompson, who used it to serve as a hero for the U.S. military.
1) Cletus Kasady

Cletus Kasady is widely considered the most dangerous person to ever bond with a symbiote, and his impact is still felt today. Symbiotes are essentially blank slates when they first connect with a host, developing their personality based on that individual. This explains why Venom generally tries to be a hero, despite his strange dislike of Spider-Man. But Carnage’s first host was a serial killer, which fundamentally shaped the symbiote’s nature.
Cletus Kasady was a disturbed individual with a violent past, starting with the murder of his grandmother in childhood. He continued to kill repeatedly, eventually leading to his imprisonment where he bonded with the symbiote that would become Carnage. Driven by Kasady’s inherent desire to kill, Carnage relentlessly seeks destruction, a trait that remained even when briefly bonded with Eddie Brock. This makes Cletus Kasady the most dangerous host for a symbiote in Marvel Comics.
