Filmmakers consider it a privilege to create stories within the Star Wars universe, inspired by George Lucas’s iconic work. While Lucasfilm occasionally approves projects from passionate creators, they’re very selective. Recently, Adam Driver shared that director Steven Soderbergh – famous for the Ocean’s films – proposed a movie focusing on Ben Solo. However, Disney rejected the idea, as they didn’t believe it was possible for Driver’s character to still be alive after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Steven Soderbergh isn’t the first director Lucasfilm has approached for a Star Wars film before fully solidifying a plan. It’s a pattern where they connect with talented filmmakers early in the process. Here’s a look at seven directors who were considered for a Star Wars movie, and we think one of them deserves another chance.
6) David Benioff & D.B. Weiss

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of HBO’s Game of Thrones, quickly found their next project. As that show neared its end, Disney hired them to develop a new trilogy of films, intended to follow the existing movie sequels.
So, remember when David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were set to direct some Star Wars movies? Yeah, that didn’t pan out. They had a deal with Netflix that essentially killed those projects before we ever knew what they were. They’ve been pretty tight-lipped about the stories, but the big hope among fans was that they’d explore the Old Republic – a really exciting period in Star Wars history. It’s a shame we’ll never see what they had in mind.
5) David Lynch

David Lynch wasn’t asked about directing a Star Wars movie because George Lucas actually approached him about directing Return of the Jedi, the last film in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Despite respecting each other, George Lucas and David Lynch disagreed on who should direct the film. Lynch suggested Lucas, since it was his project, take the helm himself. Lucas wasn’t convinced and ultimately chose Richard Marquand, who went on to successfully direct Episode VI.
4) Josh Trank

As a huge Star Wars fan, I remember when Disney bought Lucasfilm, they were looking everywhere for creative people to help continue the saga. It was really exciting! One of the first things they announced was a Boba Fett movie, and they tapped Josh Trank to direct it. It felt like a fresh start at the time!
The poor reception of the Fantastic Four movie caused Josh Trank’s planned Boba Fett movie to be cancelled. However, Lucasfilm didn’t abandon the character completely. Boba Fett later reappeared in The Mandalorian and eventually starred in his own series, The Book of Boba Fett.
3) Guillermo del Toro

The Star Wars galaxy is filled with fascinating creatures, some with rich backstories that could support their own stories. Director Guillermo del Toro once proposed a film focusing on Jabba the Hutt, hoping to explore the criminal side of the Star Wars universe, but the project wasn’t pursued.
Although that particular project didn’t happen, Lucasfilm should definitely stay in touch with del Toro. He remains a major figure in Hollywood and is still passionate about creating monster-themed stories.
2) Colin Trevorrow

I was really surprised to learn that J.J. Abrams wasn’t the first director attached to The Rise of Skywalker. Apparently, Colin Trevorrow, who did Jurassic World, had a completely different vision for the film! He was planning to bring back Coruscant, which I thought was cool, but even more unexpectedly, he wanted to actually show Mortis on screen – in live action! It sounds like it would have been a pretty different movie.
After disagreements about the direction of the film, Trevorrow left Episode IX and returned to Universal to direct Jurassic World Dominion.
1) Patty Jenkins

Even though Star Wars is now part of Disney, the same company that owns Marvel, they’re open to working with directors from rival DC Comics. For example, Patty Jenkins, who directed Wonder Woman, was once developing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, a film planned to draw ideas from the Star Wars video games and novels.
Despite recurring rumors about the progress of Rogue Squadron, there hasn’t been any solid news online for years. It’s likely the project has been cancelled, particularly since Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter explores a similar story.
