Let’s be honest, most fantasy films follow a pretty predictable path. We’ve got a dark power threatening a beautiful, magical realm, the locals putting up a valiant fight, and then things looking pretty bleak. Just when all hope seems lost, along comes an unexpected hero to shake things up. Now, sticking to a formula isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Some fantasy worlds just grab you, and you find yourself diving deep into every bit of lore about the characters and the land itself. But trust me, not every journey down those rabbit holes is a rewarding one. Sometimes, it’s just not worth the effort.
Fantasy fans often become so immersed in their favorite stories that they create their own explanations for unanswered questions. While many of these theories aren’t convincing, some are truly fascinating and can completely change your perspective when you rewatch a movie. Here are seven fantasy movie theories that do just that.
7) Gandalf Wants to Use the Eagles at the Start (The Lord of the Rings)

Many viewers find the ending of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King a little unsatisfying because eagles, who could have been useful much earlier in the story, suddenly appear to rescue Frodo and Sam from certain death. One popular idea explains this by suggesting Gandalf originally intended to fly the Fellowship directly into Mordor at the start of their journey. However, bad weather forced them to take the dangerous path through the Mines of Moria, where Gandalf nearly lost his life.
6) Snape Kills Hedwig (Harry Potter)

Harry doesn’t realize it, but his often-harsh professor, Severus Snape, is secretly watching over him. Snape even defends Harry to Headmaster Dumbledore, who appears surprisingly willing to let him face danger. Some fans theorize that Snape’s protection goes even further – they believe he deliberately killed Harry’s owl, Hedwig, during a dangerous encounter to keep Harry’s location a secret. While Snape never confirms this, it fits his complex personality.
5) The Story Is Non-Fiction (The Princess Bride)

The movie The Princess Bride begins with a grandfather starting to read a story to his grandson. It’s a tale full of adventure, with pirates, knights, and a faraway kingdom. As the story unfolds, it seems the grandfather is unusually familiar with what the characters are thinking and feeling. One young viewer noticed this and playfully suggested he wasn’t reading a made-up story at all, but a true account of events.
4) Dorothy Is the Wicked Witch of the East (The Wizard of Oz)

With the popularity of the Wicked movies, interest in The Wizard of Oz is surging. The original film leaves some characters’ backgrounds mysterious, like the Wicked Witch of the East, who dies at the very beginning. A widespread fan theory suggests the Witch was actually Dorothy’s twin, and her death was necessary to prevent a disaster.
3) Charlie Gets the Golden Ticket on Purpose (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)

In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, most of the children who find golden tickets are spoiled and wealthy. Charlie is different – he’s kind and humble, and that’s exactly what Willy Wonka wants in an heir. Some fans believe Wonka intentionally set things up so Charlie, who lived close to the factory, would have a chance to win.
2) The Black Pearl’s Speed (Pirates of the Caribbean)

As a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan, you just can’t talk about the movies without mentioning the Black Pearl! It’s Captain Barbossa’s ship, and it’s seriously intimidating – it appears so quickly and leaves chaos everywhere. A lot of us fans think it has an advantage over other ships, and here’s the cool part: the whole crew is undead! That means they don’t need food or water, making the ship lighter and way faster. It’s a pretty clever detail, if you ask me!
1) Mace Windu Is Alive (Star Wars)

The Star Wars galaxy is filled with fascinating places and untold stories, but one character deserves a closer look: Mace Windu. He appears to die in Revenge of the Sith when Palpatine throws him from a window. However, many fans still believe he survived, and continue to speculate about his possible return somewhere in the galaxy.
