I recently watched Shiki, and it’s a truly beautiful, but terrifying horror anime. It originally came out in 2010 and tells a story centered around a mystery involving vampires, all within a single, 22-episode season. It’s quickly become one of my favorite genuinely creepy anime – the visuals are unsettling, and it doesn’t shy away from gore. What really stood out was how it explores the complex line between what it means to be human and monstrous, and how easily those boundaries can be crossed by the characters.

The story of Shiki unfolds in the quiet, unremarkable town of Sotoba. Life is peaceful, until a family mysteriously moves into an old, abandoned mansion and a series of strange and violent deaths begin. Dr. Toshio Ozaki and high school student Natsuno Yuki team up to investigate, and soon discover the deaths are connected to vampires who are turning the town’s residents into undead creatures.
