Batman is famous for his compelling villains and strong supporting characters, but the everyday people of Gotham City are just as important. From the police officers of the GCPD to other citizens, these normal people add depth and realism to the Batman stories. New characters are constantly introduced, and while many become heroes or villains, readers often appreciate seeing more of these relatable, ordinary citizens within the Batman universe.
While Gotham could use more everyday citizens featured in stories, the characters we *do* see truly represent the best of the city. Even with so many corrupt police officers, they should aim to be more like these heroes. And with a new doctor appearing at Arkham in Matt Fraction’s upcoming series-one who seems to be on Batman’s side-hopefully we’ll see more characters like that in the future.
7) Vicki Vale
Vicki Vale, a leading reporter in Gotham City, was one of Bruce Wayne’s early love interests, much like Lois Lane. While she isn’t as featured as she once was, she remains an important character in Bruce Wayne’s life. She’s a clever and resourceful woman who has uncovered many of Batman’s secrets and often knows more than she lets on.
Honestly, I really want to see Vale back in the Batman comics! She brought so much to the Gotham Gazette, and just because she and Bruce aren’t together anymore doesn’t mean she should disappear. No matter what you think of her as a character, a lot of us fans really miss her and would love to see her return.
6) Harold Allnut
Harold Allnut is a surprisingly important, yet often forgotten, character in Batman’s history. This silent mechanic lived and worked in the Batcave, providing crucial technical support. Though it’s unusual Batman would house his tech expert in the Batcave, Harold was essential during the Bronze Age of comics, maintaining gadgets, the Batcomputer, the Batmobile, and even Batman’s suit. His death in *Batman: Hush* meant the loss of a valuable asset to the Batman family.
5) Leslie Thompkins
Leslie Thompkins is a hugely important figure in Bruce Wayne’s life, acting as a mother figure after the loss of his parents. She and Thomas Wayne were medical school classmates, and Leslie often helps care for Bruce, especially when his injuries require expertise beyond what Alfred can provide. Dedicated to helping others, she runs a clinic that serves everyone, even criminals like the Joker.
She’s been a crucial part of Bruce’s life, a comforting presence especially after the loss of his parents. Though she isn’t a replacement for his mother, she filled a vital role in his life during his formative years. She’s been a consistent and valued member of the Wayne family for a long time, and her work at the clinic is incredibly important to Bruce and the community.
4) Lucius Fox
Lucius Fox is a major shareholder and the true operational leader of Wayne Enterprises, with Bruce Wayne serving as the public face. He’s aware of Bruce’s activities as Batman and is responsible for creating much of the advanced technology used. Over time, the Fox family has become increasingly important in the Batman story, always maintaining a close relationship with the Wayne family. After the Joker War, Lucius took control of most of Bruce’s fortune and stepped back, a well-deserved rest after years of service. While he’s been absent for a while, fans would welcome his return.
3) Harvey Bullock
Detective Harvey Bullock is often seen as the foil to Jim Gordon. Despite seeming like a corrupt officer, Bullock genuinely cares about his city and will always help Batman when called upon, even though he doesn’t fully trust him. He became a beloved character thanks to his portrayal in *Batman: The Animated Series*.
Bullock and Gordon are an incredibly effective team, complementing each other perfectly when working on Batman cases. It’s fantastic to see them both navigate their feelings for Batman while also fighting crime. Bullock is a top performer in the GCPD.
2) Jim Gordon
Jim Gordon is a highly respected and dedicated police commissioner in Gotham City, embodying the ideals of the GCPD. He was the first to believe in Batman when the vigilante arrived, and their partnership has become iconic. Gordon is committed to justice and the betterment of his department, and has proven to be a steadfast figure within the GCPD.
Though he wasn’t Batman for long, his impact is undeniable, making him a must-include character. As one of the earliest Batman allies, he even debuted in the very first Batman comic, *Detective Comics* #27. He’s a true legend and fully deserves his place in the story. He’s relentlessly dedicated to fighting crime and won’t rest until his last breath.
1) Alfred
Alfred, the loyal butler and father figure to Batman, was truly Gotham’s best civilian. He raised Bruce from birth, guiding him to become a better man, and remained a constant presence throughout his life. Though he’s gone, his influence continues to be felt. He was Bruce’s trusted advisor and consistently helped him, offering guidance and support whenever possible.
It’s great to see Alfred back in the new series, even if it’s as a ghost or hallucination. His presence has had a huge impact on Batman, and his guidance is still felt throughout Gotham City. He’s saved countless lives, and Batman wouldn’t be where he is today without him.
