7 Great Marvel Teams That Deserve a Comeback

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I remember when they really relaunched their comic line with the Fantastic Four. It wasn’t long before they introduced the Avengers and the X-Men too! Those three groups really became the heart of the Marvel Universe – though the X-Men had a bit of a slump until that amazing Giant-Size X-Men #1 issue revitalized them. But honestly, over the years, Marvel’s created so many fantastic teams. Some have been huge hits, others have faded a bit, but they all contribute to the rich history of Marvel team-ups and have given us some truly legendary stories. They really built the foundation for all those great team adventures.

These teams aren’t headliners, making them easily affected by what comic book fans want. They’ve been sidelined in terms of publishing priority, but that needs to be fixed quickly. These seven Marvel groups are strong enough to deserve a return, and would help improve the quality of team-based comics overall.

7) Masters of Evil

Marvel is known for its great villain groups, and one that deserves a modern spotlight is the Masters of Evil. Originally presented as the evil counterpart to the Avengers, they’ve consistently been one of the biggest and strongest villain teams around. Despite their potential, they haven’t been featured much lately, and that should change. The name might be a little silly, but this is a world of superheroes – a little campiness is part of the fun! What makes the Masters of Evil so great is their flexibility; they can be any combination of villains, offering endless storytelling possibilities.

6) The Guardians of the Galaxy

The recent Imperial series didn’t succeed in bringing a fresh take to Marvel’s cosmic side. While the current Guardians of the Galaxy team hasn’t resonated with many comic book fans, it’s important to remember they aren’t the first. The original Guardians, from the 30th century, are ripe for a return. Marvel could set a story in their time, or bring them to the present day to protect a drastically changed universe – the possibilities are endless. The original team has a lot of untapped potential, and it’s time Marvel gave them another chance.

5) Secret Avengers

The Avengers are famous for being open with the public, but after a difficult period led by Norman Osborn, Steve Rogers, as the new director of SHIELD, created a covert team called the Secret Avengers. Rogers eventually returned to being Captain America, but the Secret Avengers continued operating for several years, with different writers like Ed Brubaker, Warren Ellis, and Rick Remender contributing to their stories. This team was unique compared to other Avengers groups, and many fans would love to see them return to action, especially given the challenges the Marvel Universe is facing now.

4) The New Warriors

The New Warriors initially showed a lot of promise, but declining sales in the 1990s led to multiple cancellations. While the team has been revived several times since, attempts to relaunch them – including a satirical take on current social issues – haven’t quite worked. They haven’t had a sustained chance to regain their former popularity. The solution is simple: reunite the original team as young adults and give them a real opportunity to succeed. The New Warriors have a lot of untapped potential, and it’s time Marvel let them shine again.

3) Excalibur

As a big X-Men fan, I always enjoyed the Excalibur run from the mid-80s. It was a fun idea to send characters like Phoenix, Kitty Pryde, and Nightcrawler over to England to team up with Captain Britain and Meggan for some really unique stories. The book was fantastic when Chris Claremont or Alan Davis were writing it – though things did get complicated later, but that’s another story! Sadly, the 90s really hurt Excalibur, falling into all the typical comic book tropes with each new creative team. And honestly, every attempt to reboot the team in the 21st century has been a disappointment – even the Krakoa era version! I think Marvel needs to go back to what made Excalibur special: letting them have those quirky, British adventures. It would be a huge improvement over X-Men United, that’s for sure.

2) The Defenders

The Defenders are a unique and often overlooked team in the Marvel Universe. The original lineup – Hulk, Namor, and Doctor Strange – was known for its clashing personalities as much as its battles against villains, later adding Silver Surfer to the mix. While many other heroes cycled through the team over the years – including Beast, Valkyrie, and lesser-known characters – those versions didn’t last. There have been several iterations of the Defenders since, with varying degrees of success. However, the core idea behind the original team still has potential, and reuniting the classic members – perhaps with additions like Valkyrie – could be very popular.

1) X-Factor

X-Factor has a rich history with iconic members, but the team has struggled to find success in recent years. It’s gone through many changes – starting as the original X-Men, then becoming a government team, a secret ops group, and even a team led by a future hologram. After a successful run as a detective agency in the early 2000s, the series faltered when the writer Peter David departed. While bringing back the exact original lineup might be impossible, a new version could succeed by revisiting a popular past format, especially the detective era.
