7 Great Netflix Sci-Fi Shows Nobody Talks About

Netflix is one of the leading streaming services, offering a huge variety of excellent TV shows in almost every genre. It’s become especially well-known for its science fiction content, with many of its biggest hits falling into that category. Several of the most acclaimed and popular sci-fi shows of recent years are available on Netflix, benefiting from the platform’s widespread reach. Although Netflix’s popular shows get a lot of attention, some fantastic sci-fi series sometimes don’t get the recognition they deserve.

Netflix has some must-watch shows, and its science fiction offerings are particularly strong – some really deserve more recognition. While Netflix consistently creates good original sci-fi, it doesn’t always promote these shows effectively, meaning many great series fly under the radar. Here are a few of Netflix’s best sci-fi shows that you might not have heard of.

7) Dark (2017-2020)

If you enjoy shows like Black Mirror, you shouldn’t miss Dark, a German sci-fi mystery with plenty of suspense. The story centers around families in a small German town who uncover a strange wormhole while looking for a missing child, which leads them to a dark secret involving time travel. With its captivating and unsettling atmosphere, Dark is one of Netflix’s top sci-fi series, but it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

6) The OA (2016-2019)

The OA is remembered as a groundbreaking sci-fi series that was unfortunately cancelled before its time, and has since been largely forgotten. The show, one of many victims of Netflix’s frequent cancellations, centers around a young woman who returns after being missing for years, now with her sight restored. While primarily a mystery drama, its science fiction aspects made The OA captivating and original, but it hasn’t received much attention since it ended.

5) 3 Body Problem (2024-Present)

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, from the team behind Game of Thrones, started with a lot of excitement, but that quickly faded. This is surprising, given how strong the first season was. The show tells a truly frightening story about first contact with aliens, offering some really creative and thought-provoking ideas that make it stand out in the sci-fi genre. With more seasons planned, it’s odd that so few people are currently discussing this excellent series.

4) Sense8 (2015-2018)

Despite being cancelled, Sense8 has gained a dedicated following as a beloved sci-fi series, but it still doesn’t receive the widespread recognition it deserves. Created by the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski, the show follows a diverse group of people around the globe who suddenly find themselves linked mentally and emotionally. Even though critics and fans generally loved it, Sense8 remains an underappreciated gem among Netflix’s science fiction offerings.

3) 3% (2016-2020)

Netflix’s first Portuguese-language original series is 3%, but it’s a show that stands on its own merits. This dystopian thriller centers around a group of young people from impoverished backgrounds who compete in a challenging selection process, hoping to be one of the lucky 3% who earn a place in the wealthy ‘Offshore’ community. With compelling characters and a strong premise, 3% is a standout sci-fi series that deserves more recognition.

2) Lost in Space (2018-2021)

The 2018 reboot of Lost in Space was a rare success story for TV remakes, though it perhaps didn’t achieve the widespread popularity it deserved. While reimagining the classic 1965 series, the show skillfully blended nostalgic adventure with modern visual effects and a compelling storyline. It wasn’t flawless, but Lost in Space was a solid show that deserves more recognition than it currently receives, as it’s rarely discussed these days.

1) Maniac (2018)

“Maniac” is a fantastic show with a brilliant cast that, surprisingly, hasn’t gotten much attention. This 10-episode Netflix miniseries features Jonah Hill and Emma Stone as participants in a complex drug trial, leading to a surreal and captivating experience for both them and viewers. Though it has subtle sci-fi aspects, it’s another excellent science fiction series on Netflix that seems to be largely overlooked.
