7 Hardest Bosses in Metroidvania Games

The Metroidvania genre has become known for challenging games in recent years. While the style has always been somewhat difficult, newer games often push the limits even further. Many of these games are consistently hard, but some really stand out with their incredibly tough boss fights. These battles can feel almost unbeatable, requiring players to master every skill and strategy to succeed.

Here are the seven hardest boss battles in Metroidvania history.

7) Dreamborn Terror – Grime

Many players have overlooked the Dreamborn Terror boss fight in Grime, and that’s a shame. It was added in an update and only appears when you start a New Game+ playthrough. If you’re looking for a really tough Metroidvania boss, it’s worth revisiting the game for this fight, as each of its phases gets progressively harder.

6) Raven Beak – Metroid Dread

As one of the original games in its genre, the latest 2D Metroid deserves a place on this list. The fight against Raven Beak is particularly challenging, requiring quick reflexes for several quick-time events. Beyond those, Raven Beak unleashes a barrage of powerful attacks – from claw swipes and laser beams to a black hole – during regular combat. It’s a tough battle on the standard difficulty, but attempting to defeat it on the hardest setting will likely result in many repeated attempts.

5) Lost Lace – Hollow Knight: Silksong

Hollow Knight: Silksong is more challenging than the first Hollow Knight, and players disagree on which of the final bosses is the hardest. Personally, I think Absolute Radiance is the most difficult, but Lost Lace is definitely a formidable opponent. She hits incredibly hard and attacks very quickly, making survival tough. While her attacks are a bit more predictable than Absolute Radiance’s, making her slightly easier to learn, she’s still more challenging than the standard Radiance boss. If you’re looking for the toughest boss in the base game of Hollow Knight, Lost Lace is it.

4) Eviterno – Blasphemous 2

While Eviterno isn’t the last boss in Blasphemous 2, he’s definitely the most challenging. The game aims to combine the difficult combat of Dark Souls with the exploration of Metroidvania games, so expect tough battles. Eviterno is particularly tricky: the first part of the fight is surprisingly easy, which can mislead you. The second phase is where things get really hard. He teleports constantly and attacks quickly, making it hard to defend. It’s possible to beat him, but it may take many attempts to learn his timing.

3) Absolute Radiance – Hollow Knight

Absolute Radiance is widely considered the most challenging boss fight in Hollow Knight, and that’s high praise considering how difficult the game already is. You’ll face her in the Pantheon of Hallownest as part of the quest for the true ending. Getting to this fight is a serious undertaking – you first need to defeat 42 other bosses! Then, you’ll be up against an incredibly fast opponent with a ton of health and a wide range of attacks. It takes many tries to learn her patterns, and even with perfect memorization, quick reflexes are essential. This demanding fight isn’t for those who give up easily.

2) Eigong – Nine Sols

If Blasphemous is the Dark Souls of Metroidvania games, then Nine Sols plays like Sekiro. Success depends on quick reflexes and mastering the parry. The final boss, Eigong, is a truly challenging opponent. You’ll need both precise timing and a lot of patience to beat her. Attack opportunities are very limited, demanding nearly perfect precision. What makes it even harder is that Eigong learns new attacks as the fight goes on. Expect to lose many times – each attempt will be a harsh but valuable lesson, and overcoming her is a real test of skill.

1) The Emperor – Aeterna Noctis

Man, Aeterna Noctis is seriously tough! It’s one of the hardest platformers I’ve ever played, and the boss fights don’t let up either. The Emperor is the real killer – his attacks fill the whole screen and do a ton of damage. You have to be perfect with your timing and movement, because if you mess up even a little, he’ll absolutely destroy your health bar. It’s a real test of skill!

Okay, so the third phase with The Emperor is insane. He just teleports all over the place, making it super difficult to even hit him! Honestly, if you manage to beat him, you can pretty much say you’ve conquered the toughest challenge this genre has to offer… at least until the developers decide to make something even harder, of course.
