Superhero games are known for letting you play as incredibly powerful characters, but that doesn’t mean the challenges are easy. Developers often create tough bosses to test your skills, even when you’re at your strongest. Some of these bosses can feel unfairly difficult, but with enough effort and practice, you can eventually defeat them. Be prepared for a real challenge!
Here are the seven hardest bosses in superhero games.
7) Fin Fang Foom – Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Fin Fang Foom is a huge dragon with some impressive abilities. Fighting him in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy feels a lot like tackling a challenging raid boss in World of Warcraft. You’ll need to focus on keeping your team healthy, dealing damage, and avoiding his numerous attacks. While the fight can be exciting, it often feels overwhelming as you try to manage everything at once.
6) Mr. Freeze – Batman: Arkham City (New Game+)

The standard fight with Mr. Freeze in Batman: Arkham City isn’t very hard, and generally, Batman is well-equipped to handle most of his enemies. However, New Game+ changes everything. You’ll face Mr. Freeze nine times, and you can’t use the same strategy to defeat him more than once. This forces you to really explore all of Batman’s abilities and prove you’ve truly mastered the game’s combat system.
5) Kessler – Infamous

Unlike the other games here, Infamous isn’t based on a comic book. It’s a fantastic action game for the PlayStation 3 where you play as Cole MacGrath, a character who gains electric powers. As you progress, you’ll face a challenging opponent named Kessler. I won’t give away any spoilers, but be warned: on higher difficulty levels, you’ll likely die repeatedly while learning how to counter his electric attacks.
4) Final Boss – Silver Surfer

Let’s be honest, Silver Surfer for the NES is incredibly frustrating. This fast-paced shooter makes it hard to distinguish enemies from the background, meaning many players won’t even reach the final boss. Luckily, the boss’s attack pattern is fairly straightforward once you learn it. However, it has a lot of health, and you die in a single hit, so you need to play perfectly for a long fight – otherwise, you’ll have to start all over.
3) Carnage – Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage

Like Silver Surfer, Maximum Carnage is a notoriously challenging game for its time. A big part of the difficulty lies in the awkward hitboxes – your character feels much bigger than the enemies, leading to frustrating and seemingly unavoidable damage. The boss fight against Carnage only amplifies this problem. He’s incredibly fast, with a huge range of attacks that are very hard to avoid. The game can sometimes feel unfair, leading players to suspect it was originally designed as an arcade game to drain your money, but Maximum Carnage was never actually released in arcades.
2) Brainiac – Injustice 2

Brainiac is the final boss in Injustice 2, and he’s incredibly powerful. He has a huge amount of health, and his attacks feel devastating. His tentacle attacks can quickly deplete your health if you aren’t careful. What makes him especially challenging is that he doesn’t give many clues before attacking, making it hard to avoid his combos. To win, you’ll likely need to rely on your character’s most effective, somewhat unfair, moves and use them over and over again.
1) Thanos – Marvel’s Super Heroes

It’s easy to see why Thanos is considered such a tough opponent. He’s become a major villain in the Marvel world, and this generation of fighting games featured incredibly powerful bosses. Thanos can attack from almost anywhere, leaving you with little chance to strike back. Plus, unlike other battles, you have to defeat him twice, giving him more opportunities to eliminate you. Even games based on popular comics weren’t afraid to offer a real challenge back in the ’90s.
