Science fiction offers a surprising number of excellent TV shows, and many are quite accessible to new viewers. The genre is deeply ingrained in popular culture, with countless stories becoming truly legendary. Sci-fi has spawned numerous captivating subgenres and enduring franchises, making it a dominant force in today’s media landscape. While the most successful sci-fi shows often achieve widespread popularity and global acclaim, many other worthwhile and enjoyable series have unfortunately faded into obscurity.
Some sci-fi TV shows never get the attention they deserve, but manage to find dedicated fans. Others quietly become hidden treasures. Luckily, many of these overlooked shows are now available to stream, and because they’re usually short, they’re great for watching a whole season in one sitting. Here are some currently streaming in the US, perfect for a sci-fi night.
7) The Peripheral

Although The Peripheral didn’t quite reach its full potential as a sci-fi series, its one season of eight episodes is ideal for watching all at once. The show jumps between the years 2032 and 2099, examining how technology has quietly changed society through the eyes of a gamer who finds a link to another world. Despite being canceled after just one season because of the 2023 WGA strike, you can still watch the complete series on Prime Video.
6) Travelers

Despite being a truly excellent science fiction show from start to finish, Travelers hasn’t yet reached a large audience – though it has gained a dedicated cult following. It’s a hidden gem in the genre, telling the story of agents from a ruined future who travel back in time to our present day, trying to avert disaster. All three seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix in the US.
5) Paper Girls

Many fans consider Paper Girls to be a standout TV adaptation of an Image Comic, but it didn’t find as large an audience as it deserved. Though some unfairly labeled it a copy of Stranger Things, the show is a compelling sci-fi story set in 1988. It follows four young newspaper delivery girls who accidentally get caught up in a war between different groups of time travelers. Despite receiving positive reviews, the show was cancelled after only one season, but you can still watch all eight episodes on Prime Video.
4) Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is a truly original show with a loyal fanbase, but it hasn’t reached mainstream popularity. Based on the novels by Douglas Adams, the series follows the quirky detective Dirk Gently as he solves strange mysteries while being pursued by secret agents connected to a past CIA operation. Both seasons are currently available for streaming on AMC+ in the US.
3) Murderbot

The sci-fi show Murderbot was a standout in 2025, and its successful first season led to a renewal for a second. The show centers around Murderbot, a security unit that’s gained independence, and tells a story that’s both funny and full of action. All ten episodes of Murderbot season one are now available on Apple TV+.
2) Outer Range

If you’re looking for a sci-fi show that’s flown under the radar, check out Outer Range. This neo-Western, starring Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, and Lewis Pullman, centers on a Wyoming rancher and his family who stumble upon a strange black hole on their land. With just 15 episodes available to stream on Prime Video, it’s a great choice for a weekend binge.
1) Dark

Released in 2017, Dark is a critically acclaimed science fiction series that many consider a masterpiece. Despite being a German-language show, which may have limited its initial audience, it’s a truly exceptional series with consistently strong episodes. Often compared to shows like Stranger Things and Black Mirror, Dark features a complex, mind-bending story about a time travel conspiracy that impacts a close-knit town. All three seasons are available on Netflix, and while it’s a show you’ll want to savor rather than rush through, it’s a must-watch for any sci-fi enthusiast.
