The sci-fi series Doctor Who is famous for its surprising plot twists and turns, and it’s become a cornerstone of British television. Celebrating its 62nd anniversary in November 2025, Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction show of all time. While many shows with such a long history become stale, Doctor Who consistently keeps viewers engaged with fresh ideas, shocking reveals, and unexpected surprises, creating some of the most iconic moments in TV history.
The original run of Doctor Who, from 1963 to 1989, plus a TV movie in 1996, had its share of surprising moments, but the show’s revival, starting in 2005 with Russell T. Davies, has delivered even bigger twists. Despite some recent questions about its future, Doctor Who continues to be popular, promising more surprises to come. These seven twists, however, were particularly impactful, fundamentally changing the show and continuing to shape its stories today.
7) Professor Yana is the Master and British Prime Minister Harold Saxon
Since first appearing in 1971’s “Terror of the Autons,” the Master has remained one of the Doctor’s most famous foes. Like the Doctor, the Master can regenerate, allowing the character to continue and providing opportunities for surprising developments. In the 2007 episode “Utopia,” the Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, and Captain Jack Harkness journey to the end of the universe and encounter Professor Yana (played brilliantly by Derek Jacobi), a scientist attempting to build a spaceship to save the last of humankind.
Yana turns out to be a disguise for the Master, much like the Doctor’s experience in previous episodes. He quickly transforms into John Simm and steals the TARDIS, becoming Prime Minister Harold Saxon to carry out his plan to take over the world. This surprising reveal was cleverly foreshadowed throughout the third season of Doctor Who, and is considered one of the show’s most memorable twists.
6) Amy Pond is a Ganger in Doctor Who Series 6
In the episode “The Impossible Astronaut,” Amy Pond shared the news of her pregnancy with the Doctor, but this detail was later dropped. It wasn’t until “Almost People” – where the TARDIS crew encountered people using the strange “Flesh” to create duplicates – that it was revealed Amy had actually been a Flesh duplicate for a while. This explained why she’d stopped feeling the effects of her pregnancy, but also brought the shocking news that the real Amy had been kidnapped by Madame Kovarian. Kovarian intended to use Amy as a lure, a twist that heightened the scary and unsettling atmosphere of Doctor Who’s sixth season.
5) The Daleks Are Inside Torchwood’s Sphere
Russell T. Davies was skilled at hinting at things throughout a season, then delivering on those hints in the finale. This happened in Torchwood‘s second season, where it was revealed that the organization dealt with finding, collecting, and researching alien technology. A particularly intriguing piece was a mysterious “sphere” – it was visible, but had no weight, shape, or physical properties. The fact that the Daleks, one of the Doctor’s most famous enemies, were inside this sphere – which turned out to be a kind of empty ship – was a brilliant twist and made for one of the greatest season finales in Doctor Who history.
4) River Song is Amy & Rory’s Daughter
I first fell in love with River Song when Alex Kingston appeared in “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead” back in 2008, but it wasn’t until 2011’s “A Good Man Goes to War” that her incredible story truly unfolded. It was a huge shock to discover she was the daughter of Amy Pond and Rory Williams – a baby named Melody Pond, born right there in the episode! Being conceived aboard the TARDIS gave her a unique ability to regenerate, which she selflessly gave to the Doctor to save his life in “Let’s Kill Hitler.” And just when I thought I’d grasped everything, it turned out River was actually married to the Doctor, making him Amy and Rory’s son-in-law! It’s such a wonderfully complex family history.
3) Gallifrey Was Not Destroyed During the Time War
When Doctor Who was revived in 2005, it was revealed that the devastating Time War between the Time Lords and Daleks had ended with the destruction of the Doctor’s home planet, Gallifrey. This created powerful storylines for the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctors, culminating in the show’s 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor.” In that episode, all incarnations of the Doctor joined forces to save Gallifrey by moving it to a secure, separate dimension. This effectively changed the Doctor’s past and opened the door for future stories set on Gallifrey.
2) The Doctor is the Timeless Child
While saving Gallifrey changed some recent events, the biggest shift came with the discovery of the Timeless Child in season 12. It turned out the Doctor wasn’t originally from Gallifrey at all, but a being from another world with a unique ability to regenerate. A Gallifreyan scientist named Tecteun experimented on this child, giving the Time Lords the power of thirteen regenerations, and wiped the child’s memory in the process. This means the Doctor can actually regenerate endlessly, completely changing their entire backstory.
The revelation of the Timeless Child caused a lot of debate among fans because it changed the Doctor’s entire backstory. Since then, Doctor Who has largely avoided addressing it, except for a brief mention by Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor that he was “adopted” by the Time Lords – a connection made to the character of Ruby Sunday. It would be beneficial for the show to revisit and expand on the Timeless Child storyline, giving it more significance and fulfilling its potential as one of the most impactful twists in Doctor Who history.
1) Ncuti Gatwa Regenerates Into Billie Piper
The latest development in Doctor Who is arguably its most surprising yet. The season 15 finale, “The Reality War,” saw the Fifteenth Doctor sacrifice himself to save a child, then regenerate into the Sixteenth Doctor – who unexpectedly became Rose Tyler. Billie Piper, who originally played Rose when the show returned in 2005, made a shocking return, and the reasons behind this transformation are still a mystery. While Doctor Who will continue, fans are eager for answers, as this is the first time the Doctor has regenerated into the form of a former companion, leaving many questions unanswered.
