Super Bowl LX will feature a reunion of three actors from a beloved dinosaur and adventure film. However, actors reprising famous roles in commercials isn’t new. This trend really took off around 2012 with Matthew Broderick starring in a Honda ad as Ferris Bueller, playfully calling in sick to avoid filming… the Honda ad itself, and then recreating scenes from the original movie.
The advertisements usually use humor, referencing scenes from the movie while also featuring a product. This approach effectively grabs attention because seeing a well-known actor in a familiar role helps viewers feel at ease and more receptive.
7) Cher from Clueless
Alicia Silverstone, known for her role in Clueless, recently reprised her iconic “Valleyspeak” accent in a 2023 Rakuten commercial. She also included a familiar accessory – her yellow plaid blazer – in the ad.
The Rakuten ad features Alicia Silverstone reprising her role as Cher Horowitz (with Elisa Donovan as Amber) to teach a bored class about saving money. The ad cleverly uses Cher’s iconic outfits and catchphrases like “Butt crazy” and “As if!” to grab the students’ attention and make the lesson memorable.
6) Phil Connors from Groundhog Day
One of the most talked-about commercials during Super Bowl LIV was for Jeep. It cleverly brought back Bill Murray as his famously grumpy character, Phil Connors, from the movie Groundhog Day. The ad also featured Stephen Tobolowsky reprising his role as the persistently cheerful Ned Ryerson, and Brian Doyle-Murray returning as Buster Green, complete with his signature tall hat.
This take on the time loop story shows Phil having a great time. He repeatedly drives a bright orange Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in the snow and playfully brings a small statue of Punxsutawney Phil along for ski trips, carrying it in a chest carrier.
5) Crocodile Dundee
In 2018, Tourism Australia created a commercial starring Danny McBride as Brian Dundee, the son of the famous Crocodile Dundee. Chris Hemsworth guides him around, highlighting Australia’s beautiful beaches, delicious wines, and excellent dining options.
The ad is made to feel like a movie trailer, with high production quality. Brian quickly realizes it’s actually a tourism commercial, and near the end, Paul Hogan appears dressed as his iconic Crocodile Dundee character.
4) Dr. Evil, Scott Evil, and Frau Farbissina
For a 60-second commercial in 2022, General Motors reunited several stars from the Austin Powers movies. Mike Myers returned as Dr. Evil, alongside Rob Lowe as Number Two (a role he played in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), Seth Green as Scott Evil, and Mindy Sterling as Frau Farbissina, known for her incredibly startling scream.
The commercial shows Dr. Evil’s team having seized control of General Motors. Number Two and Scott attempt to persuade him to make his vehicles more environmentally friendly, with Frau pointing out he needs to save the planet before conquering it. This leads to a typical argument between Dr. Evil and his son, Scott. Interestingly, the ad also reveals Dr. Evil is now a grandfather, and unexpectedly moves the story of the original movies forward.
3) “The Dude” and Carrie Bradshaw
The 2019 Stella Artois commercial, “Change Up the Usual,” brought back two popular actors to reprise their famous roles. Sarah Jessica Parker played Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City (which included both a TV series and two movies), and Jeff Bridges returned as “The Dude” from The Big Lebowski.
Instead of their usual drinks—a Cosmopolitan for Carrie and a White Russian for “Dude”—they both unexpectedly ordered Stellas, causing a noticeable reaction from everyone in the restaurant. This was all part of the “Pour It Forward” campaign, which aimed to bring clean water to people in developing countries.
2) Harry Burns and Sally Albright
Director Rob Reiner, known for many successful films, is widely considered to have made the greatest romantic comedy of all time: When Harry Met Sally…. The film stars Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, and the late actors Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher.
Ryan Reynolds and Crystal worked together in a Super Bowl ad for Hellmann’s mayonnaise last year. The ad featured Ryan recreating a famous scene from one of Crystal’s movies, and ended with actress Sydney Sweeney delivering the classic line, “I’ll have what she’s having.”
1) Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler, and Dr. Ian Malcolm
Xfinity created a touching commercial for the 2019 holidays, reuniting Henry Thomas with his role as Elliott from the movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (and bringing the character of E.T. back to Earth). Now, the company is doing something similar with another Steven Spielberg film, Jurassic Park, by bringing back some of the original actors.
The new ad brings back Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, reprising famous moments from the movie. It mixes these scenes with archival footage of Richard Attenborough and Samuel L. Jackson. The ad playfully suggests that the power failure caused by Dennis Nedry could have been avoided with Xfinity, and shows the characters happily enjoying a fully functioning Jurassic Park – including Neill snapping a selfie with a T. rex.
