7 Lost Avengers We Still Want Back

The Avengers are known as Earth’s greatest heroes, acting as Marvel’s primary defense against all kinds of dangers, from massive alien invasions to everyday crimes. The team has been around for a long time, and over the years, its members have changed frequently to best handle any challenge. It’s often joked that almost anyone has been an Avenger, and that’s not far from the truth! While constantly updating the team allows different heroes to step up, it also comes with some drawbacks.

It’s rare for any hero to become a permanent member of the Avengers. Most serve for a while and then move on, sometimes not returning for years – or at all. Many fantastic heroes have left the team and faded into obscurity, and we want to highlight them. Here are seven Avengers who deserve another chance, Earth’s mightiest forgotten champions.

7) Thunderstrike

Eric Masterson was once linked to Thor and briefly became the Asgardian god of thunder himself. After Thor reclaimed his role, Eric received a magical hammer and became the hero Thunderstrike. Sadly, he didn’t have a long career, but his son, Kevin, took up the mantle and the name. Both Eric and Kevin would be excellent additions to the Avengers, especially now that Thor is unavailable. They could fill the gap left by a powerful hero who controls storms, while also offering a uniquely human approach to their extraordinary abilities. Both Thunderstrikes are often overlooked and deserve another chance to shine.

6) Firestar

Firestar has the ability to turn microwaves into fire, making her a very powerful but also delicate hero. Interestingly, absorbing these microwaves doesn’t protect her – she actually had to fight and overcome cancer as a result of her powers. As both a mutant and a cancer survivor, Firestar brings unique representation to the Avengers team. Beyond her abilities, she’s a complex, relatable character with real strengths and weaknesses, making her a valuable asset to any group.

5) Justice

Let’s discuss Justice, Firestar’s ex-fiancé. He always looked up to superheroes and tried his best to be like them. What makes him unique is how he accidentally killed his father – who was abusive – while still learning to control his powers. After serving time in prison, Vance came out with an even stronger commitment to being a hero, determined to completely reinvent himself. He’s a truly dedicated individual who realized that even heroes aren’t perfect, but strive to improve, which is a valuable lesson for everyone.

4) Shang-Chi

Shang-Chi is one of Marvel’s more recognizable heroes, but it’s been a while since he’s had his own time to shine as both an individual and an Avenger. While the Avengers often deal with huge, world-altering threats, Shang-Chi helps ground them in relatable, human stakes. As arguably Marvel’s best martial artist, it’s exciting to watch him skillfully overcome more powerful enemies – his fights are always incredibly entertaining! He brings a crucial balance to the team, making him a fantastic addition to the Avengers lineup.

3) Beast

I know it sounds odd, but I truly believe Beast deserves another run with the Avengers. He’s such a core X-Man, but I always loved seeing him with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. He’s just so…charming! A real pacifist who approaches everything with optimism, a brilliant mind, and a wonderfully quirky sense of humor. Being with the Avengers really lets his personality shine. See, with the X-Men, he’s constantly burdened with being the smartest one, always trying to fix incredibly serious, even world-ending problems. But on the Avengers, he can finally loosen up and have some fun. And honestly, when Beast is happy and enjoying himself, it’s infectious – the whole team feels it, and the Avengers always foster that playful side of him.

2) Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is an immortal being who prefers to live among humans. Despite being known as the “Forgotten One,” he’s a powerful warrior with a rich history. He spent centuries traveling the world with Hercules, participating in countless mythological events worth revisiting. As one of Marvel’s Eternals – a group that deserves further exploration – Gilgamesh offers a unique connection to their story, largely due to his long history as an outcast. Ironically, his inability to truly belong anywhere makes him an ideal fit for the Avengers.

1) Swordsman

Swordsman was an original member of the Avengers with a complicated past. He initially joined the team intending to dismantle it from within, but ultimately had a change of heart and became a dedicated hero – tragically, he was also the first Avenger to die in action. Though just a normal man, Swordsman fights with a remarkably powerful alien sword called the Makluan blade, capable of unleashing devastating energy blasts. What makes him compelling is his journey from villain to someone genuinely striving to be better, even if he’s flawed. It would be fantastic to see that growth continue, making a return for this character very appealing.
