Recently, Amazon Prime released English dubs of anime like Banana Fish that were created entirely using AI. These dubs were immediately criticized, both for taking work away from professional voice actors and for their poor quality.
The AI dubbing of anime like Banana Fish on Amazon Prime is really poor, but it does highlight something important: AI can’t replace real voice actors. No matter how much AI technology improves, human voice acting will always be better, and there are already many excellent English dubs that demonstrate this.
7) Mobile Fighter G Gundam

The anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam is set in the future, where countries settle their disputes through a fighting tournament using giant robots called Mobile Suits – the Gundam Fight. Domon Kasshu represents Neo-Japan, but his mission goes beyond winning; he’s also searching for his brother, Kyoji, who is considered a traitor, and trying to learn the secrets of a dangerous robot called the Dark Gundam.
Even though the English dub of G Gundam isn’t known for being high quality, its somewhat strange voice acting actually fits the show’s over-the-top and silly nature. Plus, actors like Mark Gatha, who voiced Domon, occasionally deliver excellent performances, which contributes to why the dub has become so memorable and iconic.
6) Dandadan

Science Saru’s Dandadan follows Momo Ayase and Okarun, two high school students who develop supernatural powers after a spooky encounter. This encounter also has an unfortunate side effect for Okarun, and the pair must work together to fix it while battling supernatural forces and gradually falling for each other.
The English dub of Dandadan boasts a fantastic cast, including Abby Trott, A.J. Beckles, Kari Wahlgren, and Barbara Goodson (known from Power Rangers). They deliver a charming dub that captures the same lively spirit as the original Japanese version. Season 3 of Dandadan is currently being made, and we can look forward to even more talented voice actors joining the project.
5) Dragon Ball Z Kai

Dragon Ball Z Kai is an updated version of the classic Dragon Ball Z anime. It was created to improve the original series with a faster pace and better visuals. The English dub also features a more faithful translation of the original Japanese script compared to the earlier Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z.
The English dub of Dragon Ball Z was already excellent, and it got even better when most of the original voice actors returned for Kai. This version, Dragon Ball Z Kai, is the best way to watch the series, and its fantastic dub is a major reason why.
4) Black Lagoon

In the anime Black Lagoon, Rokuro Okajima, nicknamed “Rock,” is kidnapped by a group of pirates called the Lagoon Company and abandoned by his employer. Disgusted with his previous life, Rock chooses to join the Lagoon Company and relocates to the dangerous, lawless city of Roanapur, even though his new life is filled with increasing peril.
Featuring talented voice actors like Brad Swaile and Maryke Hendrikse, Black Lagoon consistently delivered amazing performances, perfectly balancing over-the-top scenes with heartfelt emotion. Geneon Entertainment was a major force in anime dubbing, and this series is definitely one of their highlights.
3) Yu Yu Hakusho

Studio Pierrot’s Yu Yu Hakusho follows Yusuke Urameshi, a troublemaker who unexpectedly saves a child’s life, sacrificing himself in the process. As a reward, Yusuke is revived and given spiritual powers, becoming a spirit detective tasked with defending humanity from dangerous demons.
The English dub of Yu Yu Hakusho wasn’t always a literal translation of the original script, and sometimes even improved the story. However, the cast delivered such strong performances that it almost always worked perfectly. This beloved anime is a classic of the 90s, and its fantastic dub is a major reason why it remains so popular.
2) Cowboy Bebop

The anime Cowboy Bebop is set in the future, where people have colonized space. This has led to a rise in crime and the emergence of bounty hunters known as Cowboys. The series centers around Spike Spiegel and the crew of the spaceship Bebop, following their individual adventures as they pursue criminals and grapple with their troubled histories.
Featuring a fantastic cast of voice actors like Steve Blum, Beau Billingslea, and Wendee Lee, the English dub of Cowboy Bebop is widely considered one of the best in anime. Its quality perfectly matches the show’s excellent animation and storytelling, and it remains a standout even today.
1) Baccano!

The anime series Baccano! from Brain’s Base is set in the 1930s during America’s Prohibition era, a time known for intense gang warfare. Rather than following one main character, the story jumps between various people and time periods. However, all the events seem to connect to a group of alchemists who created an immortality elixir.
Tyler Walker, the ADR director, thoroughly studied films similar to Baccano! to create a script that perfectly captures the show’s unique style. The dubbing is remarkably authentic, with each character having a fitting accent. Many consider Baccano!‘s dub a masterpiece, and it strongly demonstrates why AI can’t replicate this level of artistic quality.
