The manga series Berserk depicts a world where humanity struggles against powerful supernatural entities called the Godhand. Over centuries, the Godhand have built an army of followers known as Apostles – beings who were once human but have been transformed into demons. While many Apostles are nameless and unremarkable, the most powerful ones possess unique abilities and distinct identities. With the series continuing under Kouji Mori and Studio Gaga following the sad loss of creator Kentaro Miura, it’s a good time to take a look at the strongest Apostles created by Miura.
It’s impossible to say for sure how powerful each of these Apostles is. However, we can get a good idea by looking at what happened in the story of Berserk. We can see which demons Guts defeated, and which ones managed to fight him to a standstill or even win. Some Apostles, like the Count and Rosine, didn’t make this list because Guts beat them. With that in mind, let’s begin.
7.) Rakshas

Rakshas stood out as a particularly fascinating Apostle. He was a highly effective assassin within Griffith’s new Band of the Hawk, but what made him unique was his hidden agenda: he aimed to eliminate the White Hawk himself. Though recently killed after being resurrected from a previous battle with Guts and his companions, Rakshas proved to be a formidable fighter, likely capable of defeating opponents like the Count and Rosine. However, his power level still fell short compared to the other Apostles.
6.) Wyald

Wyald is a truly evil Apostle, so much so that he hasn’t even appeared in any of the Berserk anime adaptations. His actions in the manga are among the most disturbing ever depicted in a story, and he had the power to match them, making him a formidable villain. When Wyald fought the original Band of the Hawk, Guts couldn’t defeat him – it took Nosferatu Zodd intervening to finally end the battle. The fact that Wyald ranks relatively low on this list highlights just how much more powerful the higher-ranked Apostles are.
5.) Irvine

It’s hard to say whether our fourth or fifth ranked character is stronger – both are now key members of Griffith’s new Band of the Hawk. While the fourth character excels in many areas, Irvine is famous specifically for his archery. Despite having one of the most striking designs among the Apostles, Irvine hasn’t had as much screen time as others on this list, but his position with Griffith justifies his inclusion. From what we’ve seen, Irvine’s arrows are incredibly powerful – we’d even guess Guts would struggle to overcome him in a fight right now.
4.) Locus

Locus, an Apostle resembling a knight clad in metal, has a clear advantage over many of Griffith and the Godhand’s followers. He previously defeated countless demons in the Kushan Empire, but we haven’t yet seen him fight Guts directly. It’s uncertain whether Guts would even win, despite the significant power boost he’s received from the Berserker Armor. He’ll need a lot more strength to defeat Griffith and his apostles.
3.) Grunbeld

Grunbeld is currently the most physically imposing Apostle serving Griffith. Unlike many of Griffith’s followers, Grunbeld possesses a surprising sense of honor. He’s enormous even in human form, standing nearly nine feet tall, and transforms into a massive, undefeated dragon when he uses his demonic powers. Grunbeld proved to be a significant threat to Guts in the 2016 Berserk manga, and with the final arc approaching, he’s likely to reappear as a major opponent.
2.) Nosferatu Zodd

It’s really unlucky that Guts and Griffith’s first encounter with an Apostle is with one of the most powerful demons around, second only to the Godhand. Nosferatu Zodd isn’t just visually striking; his lifelong passion for fighting, even before becoming a demon, makes him a formidable opponent. Guts hasn’t managed to beat Zodd yet, and in their fights, Zodd usually dominates. While Zodd is a well-known demon, there’s another Apostle who actually needed to join forces with Guts to be defeated.
1.) Ganishka

It’s disappointing that the most powerful Apostle in Berserk hasn’t been animated yet. Even so, Ganishka easily ranks as the strongest, possibly even rivaling the Godhand themselves. He became an Apostle by sacrificing his own son and was willing to do anything to gain power, creating an army in one of the most disturbing moments in Berserk. While already terrifying as a human, his demonic form turned him into a massive being of pure energy. Fortunately, Guts received help from Zodd to defeat him, as neither warrior could have done it alone.
