When Todd McFarlane moved from Marvel and helped start Image Comics, the character Spawn was key to the company’s success. The comic became one of Image’s top sellers and was later turned into both an animated show for adults and a live-action film. Remarkably, Spawn is still popular today, evolving from the stories of the 1990s to newer titles like King Spawn and The Scorched. This comic has truly lasted, and a big part of its appeal is the compelling characters that live within its world.
Here’s a ranking of the most powerful characters in the Spawn universe, from Spawn himself to the leaders of both Heaven and Hell.
7) Cogliostro / Sinn

Cogliostro debuted in Spawn #9 in 1993, created by Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane. He’s actually Cain, the figure from the Bible known as the first murderer. He was also the very first Hellspawn, having made a pact with Malebolgia thousands of years ago. Throughout history, he’s lived many different lives, most recently as Sinn. In the initial Spawn storyline, he guides Al Simmons, helping him learn to control his necroplasm armor and powers.
Cogliostro is an incredibly powerful fighter, both with swords and magic. He once ruled Hell after betraying Spawn, making him a major villain in the series. Recently, in Spawn’s Universe #1 (2021), he reappeared as Sinn, stealing power from other Hellspawns using a special device to replenish his own. Ultimately, his goal is to destroy everything that exists.
6) Redeemer

The Redeemers are essentially Heaven’s warriors, similar to the character Spawn, but fighting for Heaven. They first appeared briefly in Spawn #16-17, created by Grant Morrison and Greg Capullo, and were fully introduced in the “Reflections” storyline. These angelic fighters are created by the Ethereal Masters using a process involving the Star Hive/Angel Station, which transforms select humans into powerful beings to combat the forces of Hell.
These characters draw power from a source similar to Spawn, using angelic and elemental fire – the opposite of the hellish energy Spawn uses. Like Spawn, there have been multiple Redeemers throughout the comics. Jason Wynn, who orchestrated Al Simmons’ murder, was one, but the power consumed him due to his flawed character. Another Redeemer is Phil Timper, a former criminal who found faith, and Eddie Frank is considered the most powerful of them all.
5) Malebolgia

In Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, Malebolgia is the powerful demon who governs the Eighth Sphere of Hell. He’s responsible for creating Spawn by making a deal with Jason Wynn, who arranged for Al Simmons to be killed. This was done so Al could be reborn as a Hellspawn and assemble an army for the final battle of Armageddon.
Malebolgia possesses incredible powers, including the ability to create demons from a substance called Necroplasm, project energy, control matter, and has immense strength, along with the power to raise the dead and heal rapidly. Within his own realm, the Eighth Sphere, he is unmatched in power. However, when away from that realm, he becomes vulnerable. Ultimately, Spawn defeated and killed Malebolgia. In a final act of spite, Malebolgia mortally wounded Angela, prompting Spawn to retaliate by beheading the demon lord with Angela’s own sword.
4) Spawn (Al Simmons)

As a huge fan of darker comics, I’ve always been fascinated by Spawn. While he’s the central figure, it’s interesting to note he’s not actually the most powerful being in that universe. Still, he’s incredibly strong – strong enough to kill his own creator, Malebolgia, and even earn the right to rule Hell, which he turned down! The story goes that Spawn was originally Al Simmons, a soldier betrayed and murdered by his boss. He was then resurrected as a Hellspawn, meant to be a pawn in the coming Armageddon, but he ended up forging his own path as more of an antihero instead.
When the final battle began, Spawn received godlike powers and was shielded by the Mother of Existence. To earn this power, he journeyed to the Garden of Eden and confronted twelve powerful disciples. After this trial, Spawn’s power grew immensely, transforming him into a god capable of rebuilding Earth, reviving life, and ultimately stopping the apocalypse. This demonstrated the peak of his abilities.
3) Satan

Satan is the child of the Mother of Existence and the twin counterpart to God. He is the ultimate ruler of Hell in the Spawn universe. His powers are immense, as he has nigh-omnipotence, including reality warping, spatial and time manipulation, and soul, mind, matter, and life-and-death manipulation. He is more powerful than and rules over every other Hell-lord, including Mammon and Malebolgia.
After God created humans, Satan gained their loyalty by giving them the freedom to make their own choices – a quality that set them apart. Both Satan and God later lost their power and memories, but upon regaining consciousness, they began planning a final battle, Armageddon. However, Spawn intervened, stopping the war and leaving Satan powerless, without an army, and believing he’s trapped on a desolate Earth.
2) God

In the world of Spawn, God is presented as a powerful being, the twin brother to Satan. They are both children of a primordial Mother, and she gifted them with dominion over Heaven and Hell, respectively. This ultimately led to a devastating war between the two. Like Satan, God is nearly all-powerful and all-knowing, with the ability to create, and is immortal, invulnerable, and capable of immense destruction.
However, in the world of Spawn, he is not the true supreme being. Regardless, God is the being who created humans, planning to use them as soldiers because when they died, they would be raised in Heaven and Hell to prepare for Armageddon. However, Mother stripped God and Satan of their powers, but they eventually proved too strong and returned to start Armageddon. However, in the end, God is ultimately left without soldiers and trapped in a barren-Earth perception after Spawn intervenes.
1) Mother of Existence / Man of Miracles

In the Spawn universe, the most powerful character is the Mother of Existence, also called the Man of Miracles (M.O.M.). She’s essentially the creator of everything, including God and Satan, whom she tasked with ruling Heaven and Hell respectively. This cosmic being first appeared in Spawn #75 in 1998, created by Todd McFarlane, Brian Holguin, and Greg Capullo.
She is the most powerful being imaginable, possessing limitless power, knowledge, and the ability to be everywhere at once. She also lives forever and can create or destroy entire universes, even controlling time and space itself. During the ‘Armageddon’ story arc, she appeared to Spawn as the Man of Miracles, helping him prevent the end of the world. More recently, in the ‘King Spawn’ comics, she’s been known as Gaia, but remains incredibly powerful.
